The Junior Beta Club at
Morningside Elementary
wanted to do something for
the Perry Animal Shelter.
April Pearson, who along
with Eddie Williams, spon
sors for the club said, “we
discussed how the shelter
was trying to build a new
facility.”
The students came up
with a food drive for the
shelter. “It was something
they elected to do,” Pearson
said.
Pearson said Junior Beta
Club is more about what
they can do for the com
munity. The students made
announcements over the
intercom at school announc
ing the drive and collected
pet food, shampoo and toys
to give to the shelter over
three weeks.
The students presented
the collected items to Perry
Animal Control Officer

Hannah Barrett Tuesday.
“This was the second time
they’ve done this,” Barrett
said, “They did it last year.”
Students were already
talking about another drive
in December. “It’s some
thing we want to continue,”
Pearson said. “Even though
this is a poor school,”
Pearson said, “the students
show generousity and com
passion.”
She said the club is made
up of fifth-graders. They are
invited at the end of the
fourth grade based on high
academics and teacher char
acter recommendations.
Barrett said the shelter is
always looking for donations
and volunteers. She can be
contacted at 988-2888.
