Army Corps starts
public meetings
GAINESVILLE (AP) -
Starting Tuesday, the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers
will seek the public’s input
in three states involved
in protracted water wars
- Georgia, Alabama and
Florida - as it studies how
much water can be with
drawn from Lake Lanier.
The Corps was greatly
criticized in June when it
accidentally released 22 bil
lion gallons of water from
the lake, a major source of
drinking water for the fast
growing Atlanta metropoli
tan area.
The first meeting, to be held
at the Georgia Mountains
Center in Gainesville, will
be followed by sessions in
Atlanta, LaGrange, Dothan,
Ala., and ending on Dec. 6 in
Tallahassee, Fla. - all areas
that are greatly impacted
by the water release. The
Corps is preparing an envi
ronmental impact statement
on proposed water storage
contracts in Lake Lanier.
“We have to look
at the (Apalachicola-
Chattahoochee-Flint river)
basin as a whole system,”
said Marilyn Phipps, a
spokeswoman for the Corps’
Mobile district. “The amount
of water stored in the lake
could affect wildlife down
stream.”
Critics have been accus
ing the Corps of operating
with outdated information
and releasing too much
water downstream to sus
tain endangered mussels
and sturgeons in Florida’s
Apalachicola River, at the
expense of residents farther
north.
Georgia has said the Corps
is sending too much water
to Florida. But Florida con
tends it needs even more
water to protect the Gulf
sturgeon fish and rare fresh
water mussels. Alabama
wants a steady supply of
water to meet its industrial

Phipps said the statement
could change how Lake
Lanier is managed.
“It’s possible that the nor
mal full pool will be set at a
different level,” she said.
Ron Seder, a member of
the Lake Lanier Association,
says that the group’s con
cern is to establish a mini
mum that the lake wouldn’t
be allowed to drop below,
even during a drought.
“Anybody who lives in this
area ought to be interest
ed in how low we’re gonna
allow that lake to go,” Seder
said.

His request to delay the sen
tence was denied last week.
Temple cited his his
tory of public service and
the absence of any criminal
history as reasons for his
pardon request. But if the
pardon cannot be granted,
he asked that his sentence
be shortened to a three-year
term with credit for time
served, according to the let

Temple’s attorney, John T.
Garcia, argued for a lesser
sentence during Temple’s
September sentencing hear
