School closed
because ol odor
DAWSONVILLE (AP)
- Some 950 students who
attend Dawson County High
School in northeast Georgia
received an unexpected break
Wednesday after officials
closed the school because of
a strong odor.
Dawson County
Superintendent of Schools
Nicky Gilleland said per
sonnel arriving at the
school in Dawsonville early
Wednesday smelled the odor
and suspected a gas leak.
Officials notified employees
and students to stay home
while they searched for the
source of the odor.
“We felt like it might be
a gas leak. We knew we had
to find the leak,” Gilleland
said.
Emergency services per
sonnel searched the building
and found the odor had been
caused by a battery that was
charging and overheated,
causing the smell that got
into the air system.
He says while everyone
is out of the school, offi
cials will check to make sure
everything is safe. Gilleland
expects classes to resume on
Thursday.
Williams lawyers
seek DNA testing
ATLANTA (AP) - Lawyers
for convicted murderer
Wayne Williams have asked
a judge to let them perform
DNA testing on dog and
human hair and blood, look
ing for evidence that could
exonerate Williams after
nearly two decades.
Williams, 48, was con
victed in 1982 in the kill
ings of Nathaniel Cater, 27,
and Jimmy Ray Payne, 21,
and blamed for the deaths
of another 22 children and
young men - collectively
known as “The Atlanta Child
Murders” - that terrorized
the city for two years.

Ruling limits scope of free speech law
ATLANTA (AP) - In a nar
row decision, the Georgia
Supreme Court limited the
scope of a state law that’s
aimed at preventing speech
stifling lawsuits.
The 4-3 ruling, which held
that the law only covers free
speech linked to official pro
ceedings, was met with criti
cism by First Amendment
advocates but lauded by oth
ers who said the statute was
being misused.
Tuesday’s decision upheld
an earlier ruling from the
Georgia Court of Appeals
that refused to expand the
scope of the state’s anti-
SLAPP law, which was
passed in 1996 to encourage
citizens to speak up on mat
ters of public interest and
cut down on “strategic law
suits against public partici
pation.”
The case focused on
Shirley Berryhill, a woman
who was sued for libel

she claimed on a Web site
and in e-mails that the non

before the court was not
whether Berryhill was tell
ing the truth _ although the
group said her accusations
were malicious and incor
rect _ but whether the anti-
SLAPP law would protect
her from the lawsuit.
Writing for the majority,
Justice Georgia H. Carley
ruled it would not, saying
the Court of Appeals “cor
rectly refused to expand the
scope of the anti-SLAPP
statute beyond its terms.”
