ifltarner Rollins swims to second, again
Hanson earns school record
Special to the Journal
If you were a betting person, you would
put your money on Warner Robins’ girls to
finish second. You probably wouldn’t get
very good odds but you’d be right.
The Demonettes, for the fourth straight
time this season, finished runner-up.
The latest came Friday at the Landmark
Christian Swim Meet.
Warner Robins (37-4) finished behind
Starr’s Mill 142-78. The Demons also fin
ished behind Starr’s Mill on their side 74-
31, although they were third.
Anne Culpepper for the Demonettes was
the team’s point leader. She netted a total
of 14 points with state qualifying swims in
the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Backstroke.
Freshmen Brittani Wharton won the 100
Breastroke with a top time and placed
fourth in the 100 Backstroke.
“It was amazing to see Brittani stretch
out her stroke and pull ahead of Landmark
Christian’s Lauren Me Quire,” said Warner
Robins coach Barbara Hawkins.
Teammate Abigail Cunningham earned
10 points for the Demonettes and with
state qualifiers. She qualified for state
in the 200 IM and the 100 Fly. She also
earned a personal best time in the 100 Fly.
Hawkins said.
“This was definitely a fast pool,”
she added. “Our girls’ 200 Freestyle

Bear Brawl
wit to Begin
By MATTHEW
BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
Better watch out. The
Chick-fil-A Bear Brawl is
coming back to town.
This is the annual
Houston County High
School basketball tour
nament, one that holds
memories both good and
bad for the host club.
One of the more mem
orable sports achieve
ments of 2005 in Houston
County is when Antonio
Henton, just coming off
a state championship
season as Peach County
High’s quarterback, sank
not just one, but two,
game-winning long-range
jumpers to win games in
the Bear Brawl.
Henton won the boys
championship game
against Warner Robins
not far from the 3-point
arc.
He was standing a little
bit closer to half-court,
though, in the semifinals
when he denied the host
Houston County High
Bears a spot in the finals.
To be able to win a holi
day tournament on your
home floor would have
been nice, but Houston
boys head coach Greg Nix
reminds everyone that the
Bears went on to win the
Region 1-AAAAA tourna
ment later that season
(Peach County did not
qualify for the Class AAA
tournament).
“We got over that,” said
Nix. “We stung from it
after it was over. We went
to North Gwinnett and
played in that tourna
ment, and it kind of hurt
still. After that we got
into our region schedule
and forgot it. In my esti
mation (the region tour
nament) was a lot more
important than the Bear
Brawl.
“We want to compete in
(the Bear Brawl). We’ve
been in the finals several
times. But as far as our
teams goals, the region
tournament is more
important.”
But take a look at the
opening-round match-ups
for this year’s Bear Brawl.
It is Houston County
