FALEN
From page 6C
The museum believes that
toys are an important part of
children’s development and
also American Pop Culture.
Toys guide play and help
develop imagination, cre
ativity and thinking skills
as well as socialization and
fairness. Bear in mind, these
are the classic toys and do
not include the popular
video game consoles of today
which do not develop all of
the above mentioned quali
ties and may in fact prove
to be harmful. I wouldn’t be
surprised; however, that one
day Atari, Nintendo and all
those other game systems
show up in the toy museum.
They sure have evolved since
the old days of “pong”!
The National Toy Hall of
Fame uses the following cri
teria to determine if a toy is
eligible for inclusion in the
collection:
■ 1. Icon-status: the toy
must be widely recognized,
respected and remembered.
■ 2. Longevity: the toy is

The woman disappears,

Christmas Eve, accompanied
by a police officer.
Richard Paul Evans says he
wrote his first novel, 1995’s
“The Christmas Box,” for
his young daughters. Several
books later comes his second
Christmas novel, “Finding
Noel” (Simon and Schuster),
dedicated to his “staunch
est supporter” and “biggest
fan” _ his mother, June, who
died in early 2006.
“As she loved Christmas,”
Evens writes in a readers’
note, “I chose to write a
Christmas novel.”
Crime knows no holi
days, not even Christmas.
In her fourth holiday who
dunit, “A Christmas Secret”
(Ballantine Books), Anne

more than a passing fad and
has enjoyed popularity over
many generations.
■ 3. Discovery: the toy fos
ters learning, creativity, or
discovery through play.
■ 4. Innovation: the toy
profoundly changed play or
toy design. A toy can be
selected on the basis of just
this category alone without
meeting the first 3 criteria.
The public can nominate
a toy to the Strong Museum
via the internet or mail and
then an advisory commit
tee made up of curators,
educators and historians
will review the submissions
and make a recommenda
tion to a National Selection
Committee. This committee
will vote on the item and if it
gets a high number of votes,
will become a “hall of fame”
toy and be included for dis
play at the museum.
See if this list of “hall
of famers” brings back any
wonderful Christmas morn
ing memories, (all of these
toys are registered trade
marks): alphabet blocks,
Barbie, Bicycle, Candy Land
Game, My favorite, the card
“Inspector Pitt” series of
Victorian mysteries and casts
them as amateur sleuths.
They are curate Dominic
Corde and his wife, who are
called from their London
home to a quaint village
to fill in while the local
vicar, the Rev. Wvnter, is
off on Christmas vacation.
But Mrs. Corde soon finds
Wynter out cold, brutally
murdered, in the subcellar
of the vicarage.
Christmas crime in a
warmer clime is found in
“Santa Cruise” (Simon &
Schuster) by mystery novel
ists Mary Higgins Clark and
Carol Higgins Clark.
It’s the fourth Christmas
mystery for the mother-and
daughter team.
“We wrote our first holiday
mystery together in 2000
and had a lot of fun with it,”
they said.
“We plan to continue writ
ing them.”
