HHC
spreads
joy
Special to the Journal
Rather than exchange gifts
among themselves, employ
ees of Houston Healthcare,
according to a release from
the organization, decided to
bring some joy to several
local families this holiday
season.
“Instead of buying each
other gifts for Christmas like
we do every year,” explained
Karla Jessup, RN, Perry
Hospital ICU, “we decid
ed - with the help of the
Rainbow House - to adopt
a family with five children
here in our own community
and help bring Christmas to
them.”
“Employees from both the
Emergency Department and
the ICU donated money or
bought gifts for the family’s
Wish List.”
In addition, Perry
Hospital’s Laboratory spon
sored a family through the
Houston County School sys
tem with children ranging
in age from 4 years old to
12. They were able to pro
vide a total of 40 presents,
a VCR/DVD player and all
the ingredients for a holiday
meal. The Medical/Surgical
Unit of Perry Hospital
also, adopted a family with
three children through the
Perry Volunteer Outreach.
According to Karen Herring,
RN, Nurse Manager of the
Perry Hospital Medical/
Surgical Unit, the decision
was unanimous among her
staff. “We couldn’t think of
a better way to give back to
our community than by help
ing bring Christmas joy to a
family who otherwise would
not have any,” she said. “Just
knowing that those children
will have smiles on their
faces Christmas morning is
gift enough for all of us.”
The Laboratory at
Houston Medical Center
didn’t just adopt one family
-they adopted 25 children
from HODAC along with the
children’s 16 mothers.
“Once we received the list
of names, all of the chil
dren were immediately
taken,” said Faye O’Neal,
Laboratory Manager for
Houston Medical Center.
“The desire to participate
was so great among the staff
that we decided to surprise
the children’s mothers with
some surprises as well.”
Other departments at
Houston Healthcare who
adopted or sponsored local
families in need this holiday
season included: Emergency
Medical Services and the
Emergency Department at
Houston Medical Center as
well as Quality Resource
Management and Infection
Control at Houston Medical
Center. Houston Healthcare’s
Community Education and
Services along with the par
ish nurses also collected
items to be delivered to sol
diers in Iraq.
