Bennetft performance
brightens Teclrt future
By Adam Van Brimmer
Morris News Service
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
- Georgia Tech lost a bowl
game Monday but won
something else: Faith in
the future.
Quarterback Taylor
Bennett’s play in a 38-35
Gator Bowl loss to West
Virginia takes the mystery
out of the Yellow Jackets’
prospects in the post-
Reggie Ball era. Bennett
threw for 326 yards and
three touchdowns in place
of the academically ineli
gible Ball.
Bennett spread his 19
completions among six pass
catchers: two wide receiv
ers, two running backs
and two tight ends. Wide
receiver Calvin Johnson
caught nine passes for a
career-high 186 yards and
two touchdowns while fel
low wideout James Johnson
added 68 yards receiving
and a touchdown.
The 35 points equaled the
Jackets scoring total from
their previous four losses
this season combined. The
offense scored 10 points
against Notre Dame,
seven versus Clemson, 12
at Georgia and six in the
Atlantic Coast Conference
Championship game.
“It’s about points, man,”
tailback Tashard Choice
said. “We know now when
he’s in the huddle with us,
we have a chance to win,
and that’s great.”
Confidence in Bennett
vastly improves Georgia
< Tech’s outlook for the 2007
season. The Yellow Jackets
return eight starters on
offense, assuming Calvin
Johnson comes back for his
senior season, and eight on
defense, counting lineback
Ware, Johnson
heads to the NFL
By Marc Weiszer
Morris News Service
ATHENS - Defensive
end Charles Johnson,
Georgia’s most productive
pass rusher in 2006, is giv
ing up his senior season
to enter the NFL Draft,
coach Mark Richt said on
Monday night.
Junior backup tailback
Danny Ware, who faced
the possibility of a crowded
backfield next season, is
also ending his collegiate
career to enter the draft.
Cornerback Paul Oliver,
another junior who was
mulling whether to stay or
go, isn’t expected to come
to a decision until later
this week. Richt may meet
with Oliver to talk about
his plans. Richt met indi
vidually with both Johnson
and Ware on Monday in
Athens.
“They both felt that
considering all the factors
involved, the best decision
was to enter the draft this
year,a Richt said in a state
ment. “Both indicated to
me how much they appre
ciated the opportunity to
play at Georgia and the
experience they had while
in Athens.a Johnson led
Georgia and was tied for
second in the SEC with
91?2 sacks this season. His
19 tackles for loss led the
SEC and was tied for 10th
in the nation.
Todd McShay of Scouts
Inc and ESPN said before
the Chick-fil-A Bowl that
the 6-foot-2, 275-pound
Johnson could be a late first
round draft pick. Johnson
did nothing to hurt his
stock in the win against
Virginia Tech when he had
two sacks, three tackles for
loss, a forced fumble and a
pass breakup.
ESPN draft analyst Mel
Kiper ranks Johnson as the
second best junior defen
sive end prospect.
Johnson could not be
reached for comment
Monday.
HOUSTON DAILY JOURNAL
er Philip Wheeler, who like
Johnson is also considering
a jump to the NFL.
Georgia Tech came into
the Gator Bowl with proven
talent behind every senior
starter except the quarter
back. Bennett removed all
doubts about his abilities
Monday.
“That gives him an
amount of respect with us -
- to play in a big game, help
us score as many points as
we did and keep his com
posure in a situation like
that,” James Johnson said.
“Some other quarterbacks
might have cracked, but he
was able to keep it going.”
Bennett will still have
to compete for the start
ing job in spring practice.
Steven Threet, one of the
stars of Georgia Tech’s
next recruiting class, grad
uated high school early
and is enrolled for the
spring semester that starts
Monday. He will participate
in spring practice.
So will Calvin Booker, an
Auburn transfer. Booker
was not a member of the
team this fall, concentrat
ing on his studies instead.
He will join the Jackets
for offseason conditioning
starting next week, head
coach Chan Gailey said
Sunday.
Three other quarterbacks
already in the program -
- redshirt sophomore Kyle
Manley, redshirt freshman
Jonathan Garner and true
freshman Byron Ingram -
will also push Bennett.
“I made a statement, but
at the same time I have to
go out there in the spring
and compete,” Bennett
said. “That’s the best thing
you can ask for in sports is
competition. It brings out
the best in people.
Ware became the first
Georgia freshman since
1943 to start a season
opener in 2004, a season in
which he ran for 724 yards,
but his rushing totals and
carries declined each of
the past two seasons. He
rushed for 492 yards in
2005 and 326 in 2006.
Ware faced the prospect
of playing behind leading
rusher Kregg Lumpkin and
Thomas Brown, coming off
an ACL injury, next sea
son. Promising freshman
Knowshon Moreno and
touted high school tailback
Caleb King also are in line
to join the mix.
Richt said: “In the final
analysis we always want
what’s best for each play
er and in these two cases,
both were confident this
was the right decision.a
With the loss of Johnson
and senior Quentin Moses,
Georgia returns only three
ends with collegiate play
ing experience + Marcus
Howard, Roderick Battle
and Jeremy Lomax. None
have started. Junior college
transfer Jarius Wynn from
Georgia Military College
could win a starting job.
Battle, a rising sopho
more who had two sacks
this year as a back-up to
Johnson, was waiting on
Johnson’s decision as were
Bulldog fans.
“I think about it all the
time,a Battle said during
bowl practices. “If he stays,
I still have an opportunity,
but if he leaves that’s a
larger opportunity for me.a
Oliver declined to com
ment about his decision
after Saturday’s Chick-fil-
A Bowl victory but said a
few days before the game
that he was waiting to hear
back from an NFL under
classmen advisory com
mittee. Oliver has said he
would leave if given a first
round grade, but that if
it appeared like he would
go in the second or third
round or later, he would
return.
