Nardelli resigns as
CEO of Home Depot
ATLANTA (AP) - Bob
Nardelli abruptly resigned
Wednesday as chairman and
chief executive of The Home
Depot Inc. after a six-year
tenure that saw the world’s
largest home improvement
store chain post big profits
but left investors disheart
ened by poor stock perfor
mance.
Nardelli has also been
under fire by investors for
his hefty pay and is leav
ing with a severance pack
age valued at about $2lO
million. He became CEO in
December 2000 after being
passed over for the top job at
General Electric Co., where
Nardelli had been a senior
executive.
Home Depot said Nardelli
was being replaced by Frank
Blake, its vice chairman,
effective immediately.
Blake’s appointment is
permanent, Home Depot
spokesman Jerry Shields
said. What he will be paid
was not immediately dis
closed, Shields said. The com
pany declined to make Blake
available for comment, and
a message left for Nardelli
with his secretary was not
immediately returned.
Home Depot shares rose
$1.61, or 4 percent, to $41.77
in morning trading on the
New York Stock Exchange,
near the upper end of their
52-week range of $32.85 to
$43.95. Before Wednesday’s
news, Home Depot’s stock
had been down more than
3 percent on a split-adjust
ed basis since Nardelli took
over.
Nardclli’s sudden depar
ture was stunning in that he
told The Associated Press as
recently as Sept. 1 that he
had no intention of leaving,
and a key director also said
that the board was pleased
with Nardelli despite the
uproar by some investors.

home alone over Christmas
while their mother was in
jail.
And authorities are now
looking for the mother’s boy
friend, who was supposed to
be watching the girls.
It began Dec. 23 when
police arrived at Nefiteria
Burrell’s apartment to arrest
her on a theft warrant.
Burrell, 27, called her boy
friend, John Frank Evans,
to watch her two daugh
ters while she was in jail,
Detective Jake King said.
Police checked Evans’ record
to make sure he did not have
any outstanding warrants
and was not a registered sex
offender.
“Everything checked
out,” King said. “We left the
children, at the mother’s
request, in his custody.”
But during Burrell’s three
day stay at the Cobb County
Jail, Evans told her he
would have another friend
watch the children. He left
the home before the friend
arrived, police said, and
never answered his phone
after that.
The girls remained alone in
the apartment until Burrell
bonded out of jail on Dec.
26. She arrived home to find
that her 6-year-old daughter,
who is diabetic, had slipped
into a coma. Her 3-year-old
daughter was unkempt and
unfed.
The 6-year-old was taken
to Children’s Healthcare of
Atlanta at Egleston and list
ed in critical condition. She
was stable and improving
Tuesday.
Police are now looking for
Evans and plan to charge
him with two counts of cru
elty to children and two
counts of contributing to the
deprivation of a minor
