Georgia community to participate in the recent 2007 Walk America. The event took place April 28 at the Ocmulgee
Indian Mounds and benefited the March of Dimes. Mid South, for its part, raised more than $1,200 thanks, according
to a release, to the support of their members and the community. All proceeds go directly to research to find the
causes of premature birth and how it can be prevented.

six Picnics in the Park will
be held in downtown Fort
Valley Thursday from noon

stand in Fincher Park. The
Fort Valley State University
Blue Diamond Jazz Band,
which has performed twice
before in the park will be
returning. Concessions will
be provided by Fort Valley
Main Street and Domino’s
Pizza, which will also have
discount coupons available
for diners. The fourth Picnic
in the Park will be held Sept.
27 and will feature Bruce
Brookshire on guitar and
vocals.

Fifteen Juniors who

High School are selected at
the beginning of the school
year to attend this nine
month class.

will include lunch at 11:30
and a shotgun start at 1
p.m. There will be a putting
challenge contest, a raffle
for prizes and a three day/
two night Savannah trip for
the first place team. Anyone

The Georgia Department
of Education has released
its annual report on the
professional qualifications
of teachers and the per
centage of teachers who are
deemed “highly qualified.”
In Houston County, 99.4
percent of Title I teachers
and 99.3 percent of non-
Title I teachers have been
deemed highly qualified.
In addition, 100 percent
of paraprofessionals in all
schools are highly quali
fied.
Under the federal No
Child Left Behind Act of
2001, teachers are con
sidered “highly qualified”
if they have a bachelor’s
degree, are state certified
and have demonstrated
competence in the subject
areas they teach.
Under NCLB, all teachers
of core academic subjects
must be “highly qualified,”
and all paraprofessionals
employed in Title I schools
must be deemed “highly

Georgia uses the GACE
examinations to assess sub
ject matter competency of
program graduates. Each
state was required to cre
ate a plan to help teach
ers achieve highly quali
fied status by the end of
the 2005-2006 school year.
