From left, Tucker Elementary School student Emily Stewart, teacher Amy Green, stu
dent Janique Fritzgerald, Daniel Moore and student Shelbi Moncrief admire the cab
bage brought in as part of the school’s cabbage growing competition. All third grade
classes for all Houston County schools are offered the chance to compete in the con
test, with each student vying for a chance to win a SI,OOO Savings Bond. (Each state
receives one, which is typically determined by a drawing - due to different schools
competing at dfferent times, explained one school official at Tucker.) The plants were
donated by Bonnie Plant Farm.

FRIDAY, MAY 18, 2007 ♦
During the ceremony for
Birdsell, her school also
received SI,OOO from
the Booth Road Wal-
Mart. Birdsell received
a SIOO shopping card to
buy things for her class
room and the Shirley Hills
Elementary teachers also
received gift boxes con
taining items to use in
their classrooms. lam so
proud of all my teachers,
said Shirley Hills Principal
Traci Jackson. We will use
the gift from Wal-Mart to
purchase more reading
materials for our students
and books. This money
will be used as an invest
ment to help our students
start a home library. We
must encourage reading
and it is important for our
students to understand
that reading unlocks many
doors. Jackson, left, is
