A horse is a (main) course?
During the week leading
up to the Kentucky Derby,
television
stations
ran several
memorials
to the horse
Barbaro.
His death
left a gap in
the hearts
of many
horse rac
ing enthusi
asts.
Why?
A few centuries ago,
humans admired horses
for their nutritional value.
Finally, somebody got the
bright idea to ride them
instead. I find it impossible
to fathom why anyone would
be willing to spend millions
of dollars trying to fix an
animal. People, when hun
gry enough, will eat anything
that doesn’t out run them.
During the siege of
Vicksburg in the summer of
1863, during the late War
of Northern Aggression, the
besieged were glad to get a
bit of horse flesh. It beat the
rats they were dining on.
My antipathy includes
household pets.
Although I never chowed
down on the family cat, I
always believed she was
eagerly hoping I’d die so she
could dine.
I’m not saying I’m para
noid, but I swear that when
I woke in the mornings, she
was crouching by my side

his average ringer percent
age climb steadily. This past
Saturday it was 24 percent.
He notched 48 ringers out
of 200 and finished 4-1, los
ing only to the tournament’s
No. 1 seed.
The problem with all that
recent success, he said, and
the reason his ringer per
centage is a concern, is he’s
concerned the higher it gets
the greater his chances he’ll
be moved up in class at the
world tournament, which he
is registered to compete in

in companionship. She was
checking to see if I had
become eligible as the feast.
Barbaro was a race horse.
Had he died in France, he
could very well have been the
featured special served on a
sesame seed bun. The res
taurant might have charged
extra for the privilege of con
suming a thoroughbred.
As to the family pet, Richard
111 used to enjoy devouring
felines - to the point that the
Mayor of London passed a
law to limit the King’s gusta
tory pleasures.
The Preakness will soon be
upon us and enough food will
be racing around the track to
feed a small town. Our pal
ates might be more discern
ing in the modem era, but
to my mind, we are only one
terrorist attack away from
grazing in the grass with
cows or sharpening our carv
ing knives for Old Paint.
What I resent most of all
is bleeding heart do-good
ers giving human-like quali
ties to an animal that races
because somebody on his
back is beating the crap out
of him with a whip.
If Barbaro was like most
males, what he really wanted
was a friendly mare and some
beer in his oats. If his think
ing extended beyond that,
he’d be a fan of NASCAR.
I’ve eaten rattlesnake, mon
key and more, and I know
that with enough barbecue
sauce, everything tastes like
chicken.

ies, in sports and on TV.”
If you could play golf with one

Woods. “I’d like to beat him on the
golf course.”
Oklahoma.
For now, however, he said,
winning “feels good.”
Not so for two other mem
bers of the club, Mary Ann
Gibbs and Chuck Poole, at
the tournament. They fin
ished fifth and sixth respec
tively, but in their defense
they were also playing
against the best - the A
Class - the tournament had
to offer.
Gibbs was 2-3, despite com
piling a phenomenal ringer
percentage. She notched 126
ringers - the winner of that
class only had 99 - for a
63 average. Poole finished
1.5-3.5 and connected for 94
ringers out of 200.
