Charles and Donna Bagley of Coral Springs, Fla. announce
the engagement of their daughter, LaDonna Marie Bagley,
to Jonathan Foster Steele of Gray, son of Mary Ann and
George Steele of Elko. The wedding will take place Aug. 11
at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Macon.
The bride, who is also the daughter of the late Richard
Watkins of Anniston, Ala., is the granddaughter of Jack
and Gloria Hancock, Lincoln, Ala., the late Dudley Watkins,
Anniston .Ala., Linda and Richard Parker, Cleve and Alice
Bagley, all of Anniston.
She serves in the Georgia Army National Guard and
is working to continue her education at Georgia Military
College after a year’s deployment to Iraq.
The groom-elect is the grandson of Dorothy Gorman and
the late Joseph Gorman of Maxeys, and of George Steele
and the late Winifred Steele of Warsaw, Ind. He serves a ser
geant in the Georgia Army National Guard and is working
to continue his education at Georgia Military College after a
year’s deployment to Iraq.
The couple plan to honeymoon in Jamaica and will make
their home in Gray.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy E. Smith of Richmond Hill, announce
the engagement of their daughter, Kristin Amy Smith,
to Robert Thomas McLendon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sandy
McLendon of Perry. The bride-elect is the granddaughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Woods of Midway and the late Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Smith of Thunderbolt.
The bride-elect is a graduate of Richmond Hill High
School and The University of Georgia where she received
a bachelor of science in family and consumer sciences. She
is currently the Youth Minister of Richmond Hill United
Methodist Church.
The groom-elect is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Irby Shelton of Perry and the late Mr. and Mrs. Ervin
McLendon of Florence, S.C. He is a graduate of the Westfield
Schools and is currently a student at The University of
Georgia pursuing a bachelor of arts in psychology.
The wedding and worship service are planned for Dec. 15
at Richmond Hill United Methodist Church.

Maddox 50th
Mr and Mrs. Roy E. Maddox, Sr. will celebrate their 50 th
wedding anniversary on July 28. She was the former Emily
Annette Clark. They grew up in Powersville were married
on July 28, 1957, and moved to Perry shortly after their
marriage.
They have five sons: Roy Eugene Maddox Jr., David Glen
Maddox, Michael Scott Maddox, Jeffrey Stephen Maddox
and Russell Allen Maddox. They also have 11 grandchildren
and three great-grandchildren.
According to a tribute from their children, “Roy has left
his mark on the Houston County community and surround
ing area as a well-known master craftsman and homebuild
ing with a strong work ethic.”
He retired from the Army National Guard after 42 years
of service in 1995. The tribute also notes that “Annette (also
referred to as the Stone Mart lady) has established a lasting
reputation as a true businesswoman with a love for family,
friends, flowers and stones. She never tires of serving oth

ers.
On July 28, their children along with Robert and Jay
Queen of Perry, will honor the Maddoxes with a celebration
at the home of Mike and Norma Maddox, 850 Ga. 26 East,
Elko. Norma Maddox said, “This will be a very informal get
together with country cookout and all the fixings ready to
sample around 4 p.m. that afternoon. All wishing to join in
the festivities are invited to attend.”
Sitting
up with
the dead
When I visited the
funeral home
to pay respects
to a friend’s mother, the
deceased was all alone in
the viewing room. She
was lying in a gleaming
cherry casket, surrounded
only by flowers.
No one was with her.
Not one person.
There’s no way on
earth that Fd leave my
mama alone. After all, she
doesn’t leave me alone in
life so I’m not leaving her
alone in death.
Besides that, I remem

alone
from
the moment they were
placed in the casket to the
time their grave became a
new made mound of dirt.
They called it “sitting
up with the dead.”
Taking them home was
a way of life back then and
folks often peppered their

Valentine-Bell
On June 27, Jacqueline Lynn Valentine and George
Robert Bell Jr. were united in marriage at Cornerstone Free
Will Baptist Church, Fort Valley. The Rev. Grover S. Jewell
officiated at the ceremony, which was followed by a recep
tion at the church.
The bride is the daughter of the late Doris C. Alexander
of Byron, and the late William H. Alexander of Alma. The
groom is the son of the late Margaret H. Bell of Elko and the
late George R. Bell Sr. of Greenville, S.C.
Jams • Benjamin Valentine, son of the bride, gave his
mother away. Nora C. Cox of Bonaire, aunt of the bride,
was the maid of honor. Margie Wells of Silver Creek was the
