Feeding
the hungry
Alvalyn Pope let me
know that Christ
Lutheran Church in
Perry is getting plans under
way for a once-a-week soup
kitchen. They’re looking for
others to join them in this
effort.
They need cooks, servers
and all
sorts of
other vol
unteers.
The first
planning
meeting
will be at
10 a.m.,
Aug . 1 0
at the
church,
which has

its new home in the old ag
building on Carroll Street
in Perry.
Teachers and taxes
Can you believe that school
is about to start again? The
teachers will be in their
classrooms Monday getting
ready for the new school
term, and the kids will start
on Aug. 6.
We’ve got three new schools
to open in Houston County:
Mossy Creek Middle School,
Hilltop Elementary and
the new Lake Joy Primary.
(There will be two schools at
that location.)
Now’s The time that kids
need new clothes and all sorts
of supplies. Parents should
take note that Georgia’s tax
free holidays are Thursday
through Sunday. That means
a savings of six percent on
school clothes, computers
and other back-to-school
items.
You can make the most of
this by using cash, because
the interest on a credit card
might well eat up any sav
ings!
Drugstoreville
I’m thinking that in
another couple of years,
Perry might have the high
est number of drugstores
per capita of any small town
in the world.
Let’s hope they have price
wars.
Apt. 36
Last week I mentioned
that Brutus, my sister’s cat,
had a cold. He’s well now,
and Emily Jane has the cold.
Brutus was pathetic but
sweet when he had his cold.
E.J. has been awful.
Tina and I tried to give
her one of Brutus’ cold pills,
and Tina wound up with a
hind claw sticking out of her
arm.
The next morning, E.J.
was sort of# like Elizabeth
Barrett Browning in a mood
of melancholy, snuffling,
sneezing and wheezing and
collapsed on the sofa. I took
her to see the veterinari
an but she didn’t cough or
sneeze for him. Instead she
acted like a bobcat, growling
and hissing.
She had no fever.
Once she got home she
resumed the snuffling and
sneezing, but the diva gets
no more sympathy from me,
because I’ve started sneez
ing myself.
Mystery messages
Does anybody else have
problems understanding
what some TV commercials
are about?
I mean the ones that have
the skyscraper offices with
glass walls, the ones with
the floating scarves, and the
ones where everybody in the
world is somehow getting
friendly because of a search
engine.
Also, what’s that business
with the man and wife sitting
outdoors in twin bathtubs?
(Yes, I understand what the
commercial is about, but do
people really sit outdoors in
matching bathtubs looking
out at the ocean? Maybe it’s
a California thing.).

I’m living in a house full of testosterone
I live in a house full of
males and sometimes
think 1 am drowning in
a sea of testosterone. From
the way they eat, to the
messy closets, to the inap
propriate noises that they
make, and beyond. Many
days I feel that I am the
only female living in a fra
ternity house.
Mealtimes can really
be chaotic. I have made
some changes in mealtime,
though. For years I would
stand in the kitchen while

When living in a house
with six boys, including my
husband, someone is always
hungry 24 hours a day, and
can be quite picky. I have
been heard to say many
times, “This is NOT ‘Burger
King’, you can’t have it
your way.” Usually they will
find at least something that
is edible. The boys have
become quite proficient at
cooking. Sometimes, that is
the only way they are going
to get something to eat.

The boys’ closets are a
different story. The closets
can be perfectly organized
one day, and then two days
later clothes are piled three
feet high in them. I really
don’t know how they do
that. It must be a gift .
Then, when I tell them
to clean out their closets,
somehow all the clothes
that were on the floor end
up in the laundry room. It
doesn’t matter if the clot hes
are dirty or clean, they still
