Freshen up! Odor removal in antiques
I just love the smell of old
antique furniture and
houses! I do not, how
ever, ei\joy the unfriendly
odors that can inhabit these
treasures such as mothballs,
mold, mildew and cigarette
smoke.
To some these smells
are just part of the “prove
nance” of vintage wares but
for those that want to rid <
their collectibles of offensive
odors, there are several ways
to lessen them or get rid of
them altogether.
Fresh air and limited
amounts of sunlight can
cure a lot of “musty” odors.
Sometimes just opening
doors and drawers can help.
Placing the item in a open
garage or protected place
like a carport and opening
it up will speed up this pro
cess. Placing a fan in or
near a piece of furniture and
circulating the air will help
as well.
For stronger musty odors,
try putting some baking
soda or dry carpet cleaner
in an aluminum pan in the
drawers or under the piece
of furniture. I have heard
that kitty litter can also
absorb offensive odors as
well. Commercial products
such as Febreeze and such
must be used cautiously and
are intended for fabrics, car
pets and upholstery, not fur
niture. If you use this on
a vintage item, first try it
on an inconspicuous place.
Some vintage carpets and
upholstery have dyes that
Offering a few houseplants suggestions
Last week we took a look
at some of the things
that can go wrong
with your houseplants and
some things that you can
do to solve these problems.
This week I would like to
review those from last time
and offer a few additional
suggestions.
First, we said to LEACH.
Leaching removes excess
soluble salts (fertilizer mate
rial) from the soil. This is a
cleansing action and should
be done on a regular basis
for all plants.
Second, you need to
PROVIDE MORE LIGHT.

grown plants, only agla

lilies, snake plants, pothos,

others can thrive in very low
light.
Light is measured in foot
candles,- and “low” light is
an intensity from about 50
to 200 foot-candles. The
majority of plants require
more light than this to grow
properly.
Third,INCREASE
HUMIDITY. Plants that
are suffering from too low
humidity may develop brown
edges and tips and generally
grow poorly. Ways to increase
humidity are to group plants
together, mist them, or to set

more of the cedar scent. This
will also help remove the
scent of mothballs and such
although wood is porous and
harder to rid of offensive
odors.
Tobacco odors are a lot
harder to get rid of since it
has usually taken years to
accumulate that smell and
the odors are absorbed by
the wood and even the fin
ishes! According to a furni
ture cleaning article in
The Cotton and Quail,
they recommend thoroughly
cleaning all surfaces with
mineral spirits and clean
rags.
The spirits shouldn’t
harm a sound finish and you
will be amazed at the grime
that comes off along with old
wax and polish. Then wipe
the piece down with dilut
ed ammonia (a capful per
quart). Alternate an ammo
nia cleaning with a, diluted
vinegar cleaning. Do not
saturate the piece and let it
dry overnight between wash
ings. Make sure to clean all
plants in shallow trays con
taining gravel and water.
Fourth, WATER LESS
OFTEN.

age disease-causing patho
gens such as bacteria and
fungi.
Another thing which can
be done is to REPOT the
unhealthy plant. Try remov
ing the plant from its pot. If
the root system appears to
be rotting or is in bad shape,
there are no fungicides that
wilf correct this problem.
However, if you will wash
all the old soil and rotten
roots off the plant and repot
it in a clean, loose soil in a
clean pot the plant has an
excellent chance of starting
new growth and regaining
its original vigor.
ADD LIME. Many of the
soil mixes used to grow
houseplants are low in pH.
Similarly, most of the fertil
izers we use on houseplants

surfaces including insides
and bottoms of drawers and
the furniture body.
Mold and mildew are per
haps the most troubling
odors because they are
organic and can produce
problems in people who are
allergic to them. The best
way to get rid of this prob
lem is to use a little bleach
(capful per quart) in warm
water and wipe down every
single surface of the piece.
The solution doesn’t need
to sit on the surface. Mold
and mildew will be killed
on contact. Do not saturate
the piece, just use a cloth
dampened with the bleach
solution. Immediately dry
the surface after washing
with a soft cloth.
Always remember to try
the cleaning remedy on an
inconspicuous place to make
sure you won’t damage the
piece.
Do not wax or polish until
the item has been cleaned,
dried and aired out well or
you will just trap the odors
in the wood again. Happy

tend to acidify the soil over
a long period of time. This
is significant because the pH
of the soil determines the
availability of the nutrients
your plants need in order to
grow properly.
A slightly acid pH of
between 6.0 and 7.0 is desir
able for most plants. Adding
one teaspoon of dolomitic,
or agricultural lime, per six
inch pot should increase the
pH to a desirable level. Add
one tablespoon to larger con
tainers up to the size of a
hanging basket. This can be
done twice each year.
One last thingyou may con
sider is to SPRAY FOLIAGE
WITH MAGNESIUM
SULFATE. If the plant’s
leaves are a pale green, a
light foliar spray of “Epsom
Salts” (magnesium sulfate)
will sometimes green up the
plant.
An application of one tea
spoon in one gallon of water
will temporarily solve the
problem, but after a couple
of weeks it will need to be
done again. On the other
hand, a complete fertilizer
containing magnesium will
provide a more long-lasting
cure.
I hope that these pointers
will help you in your quest
for healthy, attractive house
plants.

LIFESTYLE
Switching gears from older
men to younger ones
If a woman is truly fortu
nate, she will know two
distinct dating periods
in her life. The first will be
when she is deemed mature
enough and interesting
enough to date older men.
The second will come when
she is declared fun enough
and sexy enough to date
younger men.
The key is knowing when
the time has come to change
sides.
My friend, Dee Dee, and
I were lamenting over the
kind of blind dates that
folks send our way. Though
we both enthusiastically
declare regularly that we
are not going on any more
blind dates, we do succumb
to exceeding peer pressure.
“I have one next
Saturday,” she admitted.
“He’s 52.” She rolled her
eyes. “I’m sure he’s old
looking.”
“Listen, I just had one
who was 54,” I said. “He
was an old looking 54, too.
Gray hair, stooped, half
blind.”
We were at dinner with
Dee Dee’s mom, who was
listening to our lamenta
tions with amused enjoy
ment. Never one to keep
her opinions to herself, she
spoke up. “You two need to
be dating younger men, not
older ones.” We looked at
each other then we looked
at her. The idea was defi
nitely interesting. She con
tinued.
“When you’re 30, it’s fine
to date men 12 years
older but after you hit
40, it’s a whole different
ballgame. If you’re not
careful, you’ll wind up
with someone you’ll be
taking care of in a few
years.”
Well, it didn’t long to
talk us into -that new
game plan. My first boy
friend was three years
older than me, my sec
ond was two years older
and my third was 10

That’s a lot different than

He’s had a crush on me

he’s, well, too young. Ten

That’s all changed now.

He laughed delighted
