Speeding up your computer
Dear TechnoFiles: I have
a relatively new computer
from Dell but it’s become
slow as molasses. What can
I do to speed it up? - Deb in
Warner Robins
Dear Deb: Computer
slowdowns are due to many
causes, and I’ll hit just the
highspots. The primary case
of slowdowns is because
of low system resources.
Resources are things like
memory and hard drive
space the computer uses
to do tasks. If you get low
on either, your computer is
going to slow to crawl. If you
are running Windows XR you
need at least 1 gigabyte of
memory to effectively work.
Microsoft Vista, the newest
operating system, requires
about twice that. If you have
less then you just have to run
less, but memory is cheap
and can be installed at many
local computer stores if you
aren’t comfortable doing it
yourself. You can check how
many processes your com
puter is running by hitting
the ctrl-alt-delete buttons
on your computer. Anything
using a lot of memory or
computer time is something
you want to run individually
or not at all if possible. Use
Windows disk defragment
er to check your hard drive
and make sure it’s running

jnce a week, once every two weeks, or once a month is being
evaluated as part of a medical research study. ® ! 4
Although many diabetics are able
to control their blood sugar levels
through diet and exercise, many
others also require a medication.
And while there are current
medications available for treating
type 2 diabetes, most require daily
dosing - a constant reminder of
the disease. As a result, medical
researchers feel it’s important to
explore other possible diabetes
treatment options that provide an
alternative to daily dosing.
Today local doctors are conducting
a medical research study evaluating
the safety and effectiveness of an
investigational diabetes medication
administered to participants once
a week, once every two weeks, or
once every four weeks, depending
on which treatment group they are
assigned.

this service. Is there a ser
vice on the web that tracks
changes for me? Thanks! -
Mike in Perry
Dear Mike: There are
numerous fee-based servic
es that monitor web pages
you specify for any changes,
but before you go there, you
might want to try a couple of
free services first. The first
one is called Track Engine
(www.trackengine.com). It is
very customizable and offers
a nifty toolbar icon with
which you can simply drag
and drop the URL of a web
page that you want to moni
tor. Another one to check out
is Watch That Page (www.
watchthatpage.com). It is
the most popular notifica
tion service but is starting
to suffer from that popular
ity. There are some delays in
notifying when a monitored
web page changes, but you
can upgrade to priority ser
vice for a fee.
Most of the fee-based ser
vices offer a free trial peri
od, so they might warrant
a look. Try Update Patrol
(www.updatepatrol.com)
and Info Minder (www.info
minder.com). Both offer a
30 day free trial, but the
Info Minder service limits
you to 10 monitored web
pages during your free trial
period. - Tina
