WRALL All-Stars rally past Alabama
By JOE MATTHEWS
Special to the Journal
The Georgia state
champion Warner Robins
American 11-12-year-olds
scored two runs in the sixth
inning for a 6-5, come-from
behind victory over the
Alabama state champions
in the opening game of pool
play at the Little League
Southern Regionals in St.
Petersburg Fla., Saturday
evening. The roller coaster
contest left players, coaches,
parents and fans drenched
in sweat, only part of which
could be blamed on Gulf
Coast heat and humidity.
By coin flip, Georgia
played as visitors for the
game. The Americans
lost no time in getting on
the board against starter
Blake Elmore and the All-
Stars from Westside Little
League in Mobile, showing
the power that had carried
them this far. Zane Conlon
led off the game with a sin
gle. One out later, Kendall
Scott buried a 1-1 pitch in
the cemetery behind the
center field fence for a home
run to put Georgia up 2-0.
In the bottom of the
first, Clint Wynn took
the mound. Following a
strikeout, Alabama’s Chad
Luse doubled. Mason
McCullough lined a single
to left, but Luse had to hold
at second on right fielder
Nick Martens’ diving stop.
A wild pitch advanced both
runners, but Wynn fanned
the next two batters to end
the inning.
The Georgia champs
would strike again in the
third inning. Consecutive
singles by Martens, Conlon,
and Dalton Carriker load
ed the bases. A wild pitch
scored Martens. Conlon
then attempted to score
on a pitch that knocked
off the Alabama catcher’s
glove, but he recovered to
throw to the pitcher cov
ering home to nip Conlon.
But Scott singled to score
Carriker, putting the
Americans up 4-0.
The powerful Georgia
team had not been serious

ly challenged during their
run through the state tour
nament. But that changed
in the bottom of the third.
Alabama seemed to lock in
against Wynn during his
second time through their
lineup. Luse again singled
to lead off. McCullough as
hit by a pitch. A strikeout
and a nifty force at third
by Carriker had it looking
like Georgia would again
escape unscathed. But the
next five Alabama hitters
went double, single, single,
single, and single. Only
a strong throw from left
fielder Keaton Allen to cut
down an Alabama runner
at the plate ended the scor
ing with Alabama now lead
ing 5-4.
Georgia did not score in
the fourth. Alabama put
on two runners with one
out in the bottom of the
inning, but two fine field
ing plays by Carriker at
shortstop - the second a
stumbling, over-the-shoul
der grab of a pop-up - kept
the Westsiders scoreless.
Back-to-back Alabama
errors to open the fifth put
two Georgians on base, but
they could not take advan
tage. The bottom of the
fifth was much like the
fourth. Alabama put on
two runners with one out.
Facing his pitch count limit,
Wynn fanned his last bat
ter. Carriker relieved and
retired Luse on a fly to
right with his first pitch.

Micah Wells then singled
to score Umphreyville and
tie the game. John Cuttrell
relieved Elmore. After a
strikeout, Conlon singled
Wells to third. Carriker’s
fly to left was too shal
low to score the runner.
Alabama had seen enough
of the next batter “Sluggo”
Scott. Even with first base
occupied, they intentionally
walked the Georgia catcher

up Wynn. Pretty soon he

Little Leaguer dreams of:
last inning, tie game, bases
loaded, full count. The pay
off pitch appeared to plunk
Wynn on the arm. After a
lengthy discussion by the
umpires, he was awarded
first base as the go-ahead
run scored.
The game was not over
though. McCullough
reached on an error to lead
off the bottom of the sixth.
Carriker fanned the next
two batters, but Harrison
Frantz singled to put the
winning run on base with
two outs. The batter was
Elmore, who had yet to
be retired on the night.
Elmore smashed the sec

base line. Hunter Jackson
knocked it down,.with the
ball trickling into foul terri
tory. Scrambling after it on
hands and knees, Jackson

tag third base with the ball
itself a split second before
the runner for the force out.
Game over. The contingent
of Georgia fans left the field
emotionally drained, but
wearily elated.
