were “risking their lives in
a tough fight with a deter
mined foe, and noted that
the country’s fighting forces
had repeatedly “given the
gift of freedom to those they
vanquished, and restored
liberty to others, asking
nothing in return, “Not
oil, not dominion, nothing
except enough ground to
bury our fallen dead.”
Campbell, who received a
standing ovation at the end
of his historically-grounded
and often eloquent speech,
cautioned his audience the
war against Islamic Jihadists
would not end soon.
“There is local, regional,
religious and ethnic strife,”
he said of Iraq, but A 1
Qaeda is the larger glob
al threat. They want to
destroy western, liberalized
democracy. They are count
ing on Americans to lose
their resolve.
“They think we are mor
ally weak.”
After citing such examples
as Valley Forge and Omaha
Beach to prove that the ter
rorists don’t know their
history, Campbell said, “We
have communicated mixed
messages to our enemy.”
He noted that debate
was essential, but that we
should be letting the enemy
know our “clear and unmis
takable intentions.”
In regard the future of Iraq
and Afghanistan, Campbell
said “The American soldier
can create opportunities,
but the Iraqis and Afghans
must seize the opportuni
ty”
During a question and
answer session, Campbell
expressed the view that the
armed forces are “stressed,
under funded and under
capitalized” and that the
government nee*ds to “grow
the army” by at least 547,000
in the next five years.
In regard to the draft, he
said he thought the political
will was not there, but also
added that all those who
enlisting now know that
they will be going to war
and will be in harm’s way.
