He describes it as “being
in your own separate little

him sounding sorry for him

“I’ve always been a person

he says, and he goes on to

“I was on vacation in North

I started getting to the point
where I couldn’t take the
heat outdoors. I’d get really
out of breath. I started hav

trouble sleeping. Every day
it got worse.”
Finally, he decided he had
to go home, and once home,
he wound up in the Perry
CRCT standards.

Egleston Children’s Hospital
in Atlanta.
After tests, he was diag
nosed as having lymphoma,
and the breathing difficul
ties were explained.
“I had a tumor in my chest
bigger than a softball,” he
says. “It was a lymph node
swollen up.”
The chemotherapy has
caused the tumor to disap
pear, and he’s weathered a
bad allergic reaction to one
of his medicines. Now he’s
going through chemo again.
It isn’t the way a 16-year
old should have to start his
junior year in high school,
so winning that blue ribbon
was an unexpected boost.
“A chain,” he explained,
holding the realistic work of
art out to its full length, “is
only as strong as its weakest
link.”
It’s a good symbol for a
young man whose strength
is being put to the test.

In 2005, Bonaire also won a

Elementary and Quail Run
Elementary are two of only
28 elementary schools in the
state of Georgia to receive
this award in 2007.
Houston County High
won a Bronze award for hav
