when Walker’s tire blew out.
Evidence showed that Walker
spotted the victims check
ing into an adjacent hotel.
He and Williamson followed
the victim (Poling) into the
hotel lobby and determined
that Poling was a suitable
target. When Poling and
his girlfriend, Gallo, were
unloading their car to get
into their room, Walker and
Williamson insisted on help
ing them transport their
luggage.
Shortly thereafter, Walker
pushed Poling to the ground
and demanded money. After
rifling through his pocket,
Walker then threatened
Poling’s girlfriend and chil
dren with bodily harm unless
Poling turned over his wal
let, which was in his room.
They then forced Poling at
gunpoint toward his room.
Poling ran and managed to
get in his room, where he
and Gallo struggled to keep
the attackers out. After man
aging to get the door closed,
the victims called 911.
Unknown to the attack
ers, Det. Drew Dodson of
the Perry Police Department
was doing surveillance work
in the area and saw the
attackers running from the
scene. He called for patrol
backup about the same time
as the 911 call came in.
As a result of his quick
action, Walker was captured
at an adjacent Waffle House
and Williamson, who pled
guilty July 31 to the kidnap
ping and armed robbery and
was -sentenced to 20 years
to serve 10, was captured
at a residence a short dis
tance away. The gun was
recovered, the money was
found on both of the attack
ers and surveillance cam
eras showed them running
from the scene.
Walker testified on his
own behalf and failed to con
vince the jury that the state’s
overwhelming evidence was
insufficient to convict him.
“This case was made pos
sible by incredible detective
work on the part of Det.
Drew Dodson,” Burke said.
“As one of the juror’s said,
she feels safer at night in
Perry knowing that officers
like Det. Dodson are looking
out for her. Det. Dodson’s
vigilance made this appre
hension possible and the
work of his colleagues in
capturing the armed robbers
was impressive.
“The hotel security cam
eras, the photographs, the
interviews and the investi
gative work made this case
presentation pretty straight
forward. I commend Chief
