Perdue to hold
water contest
Special to the Journal
Gov. Sonny Perdue
announced this week
the Governor’s Water
Conservation Contest, open
to all students in third, fourth
and fifth grades. The con
test, according to a release,
is designed to encourage stu
dents to think creatively of
ways to conserve water by
designing a plan that pro
motes water conservation.
“I believe that awareness of
the water conservation effort
has the potential to spread
throughout Georgia’s young
er generations the way that
the campaign for seatbelt use
did years ago,” said Perdue.
The contest asks students to
develop a water conservation
plan for their community by
describing their proposed
project in an essay and draft
ing a budget for implementa
tion of the project. Students
can work on the essay and
budget as a class, a grade
or as a project by all partici
pating grades. The principal
of each school will choose
one winner to submit to the
governor for consideration.
Perdue will bring together
judges to read submitted pro
posals and select the winning
plan for implementation.
All entries must be received
by the Governor’s Office of
Student Achievement by Dec.
6. The contest winner will
receive a $2,000 prize to be
used to carry out the con
servation plan in the com
munity.

TAC Tanker Association a key part ot AF history
Special to the Journal
In recent years many
authors have written about
the art of in-flight refuel
ing. Without going into great
detail, it should be noted that
most authors leave out one
of the highly successful chap
ters in the development and
implementation of in-flight
refueling as it is routinely
practiced today.
An extensive article in the
October/November 1997 issue
of Air and Space magazine
covered the first attempts of
refueling in flight from 1923
thru the publication date.
The author noted that
the KB-50J of the Tactical
Air Command had probe
and drogue capabilities but
ended TAC refueling recog
nition there. The truth is,
from 1953 to 1965 the opera
tions of KB-50J/K tankers
played a very significant roll
in support of the 100-series
fighters beginning with the
F-100 thru the F-105 and the

B/RB-66. A KB-50J/K squad
ron stationed in England also
supported the English Vulcan
bomber as well as NATO
fighters in that theater.
In fact, TAC operated
around the world moving
fighter aircraft in large num
bers wherever they were
needed. These operations
were known as the Composite
Strike Force. Tactical Air
Command tankers com
manded from the 4505th Air
Refueling Wing at Langley
AFB in Virginia, supported
an overseas deployment in
the summer of 1958 with
such speed and precision
that TAC and the 4505th
ARW were awarded the
prestigious McKay Trophy.
TAC operated four squad
rons in the U.S. The 427th
AREFS activated at Robins
AFB in October 1956, later
transferred to Langley along
with the 429th AREFS. Two
additional squadrons were
located at England AFB in
+7B-988-5W
SO/ Carroll Street
( across from old courthouse - Downtown Perry)
4/trays rernentftrrcrf
Louisiana and Biggs AFB in
Texas, the 622AREFS and
the 431st AREFS, respective
ly. The overseas squadrons
were the 421st AREFS in
Yokota, Japan and the 420th
at Sculthorpe, England.
The TAC Tanker
Association, Southern
Chapter, which meets at
the Warner Robins Cracker
Barrel, recently recognized
that organization for, accord
ing to a release, “their fine
service” to the chapter from
September 2004 through
October of this year.
