30 years ago:
A poll of Interstate 75 travel taken at Perry and Calhoun by the Georgia Department of
Transportation has traffic at its highest levels ever - reportedly more than both of the two years
prior. The GDOT found that on an average day 12,443 vehicles passed the observation point.
In the “bring a smile” department, a picture lists the winners of the Walk A Thon, used to raise
funds for the Houston Lung Association. What makes that worth smiling about? Only the “bicycle"
pictured that the first-place winner received.
20 years ago:
Tyrone L. Tharpe was formally charged in the murder of Perry High School senior Carla Ragin.
Tharpe was 17 at the time, reportedly a Perry High School dropout (10th grade) - he is also pic
tured in military uniform but there is no reference to military service in the article - and lived right
next door to Ragin. In other news, a second homicide strikes Perry when Charlie “Clay” Brown,
49, is found with a gunshot wound to his head. “We have a few leads but nothing as of yet,” says .

Operation “Stop ‘N Strap”, reportedly wave two of the state’s intensified seatbelt program, nets 32

no lane closures on inter
states or state routes this
Thanksgiving weekend.
“Lane closures will
not be allowed over the
Thanksgiving holiday,”
said Kimberly Larson,
DOT communications
specialist. “Lane closures
on interstates and state
routes for construction
are prohibited from 5 a.m.
Wednesday (today) until
midnight Sunday.

In mid-September, a volunteer
Christian group from Norcross came to
Americus to help rebuild homes dam
aged by the March 2007 tornado. I was
one member of the group. People from
First United Methodist of Americus,
First Baptist Church of Americus, First
Baptist of Perry, and Untied Methodist
Committee on Relief helped us with
lodging, food, building supplies, and
leadership.
I kept thanking them and they kept
thanking me.
