Meet the lucky winner.

LAST SPRING, we teamed up
with TLC’s What Not to Wear
and gave readers a chance to
nominate themselves for a fash
ion makeover. The response was fierce:
Nearly 7,000 USA WEEKEND readers
wrote in to ask the show’s hosts, Stacy
London and Clinton Kelly to transform
their wardrobes.
In May, London and Kelly surprised
lucky reader Tamara Hill Garner, 36, of
Chicago with the news that she had been
chosen, then whisked her off to New York
City to shop and learn.
The results of her makeover, revealed
Nov. 16 on TLC, were impressive. This
self-described frumpy wife, mother
and social worker went from drab
to fab and couldn’t be happier.
We met up with the bubbly Gar
ner, w r ho reads USA WEEKEND in
the Chicago Sun-Times, on the f*e
final day of her whirlwind
week in Manhattan. By the
time we saw her, she looked
glamorous and was thrilled
with her new wardrobe and
the helpful tips she picked
up under the tutelage of the Ik
What Not to Wea r crew. Here, BH
with Kelly and London, Garner %
reveals the new fashion rules that %
she’ll be living by.

always talk to them about
the importance of getting an ,

now. Gamer’s wardrobe ■
includes properly fitted £
bras, well-tailored busi- V
ness suits, shape-enhancing
dresses and chic casual clothes.
Dress for your shape, no matter how much you
may weigh. Gamer often battles a 20-
pound weight fluctuation as a result of
medication she takes, and her ward
robe had not been updated to deal
' with the frequent changes. “She was
complaining, ‘I still dress like I’m
a size 6,’ ” London says. “But I’d
venture to guess that even at a
size 6, she wasn’t dressing her
body correctly. Size is so much
less important than shape is.”
L_ When you gain or lose weight,
your shape will remain basi
/ J cally the same, London says.
Tj “First, know what kind of body

per body by getting great bras and at
tacking her midsection with the right
kinds of clothes.” The final result? An
updated wardrobe that features wider-leg
trousers to make her w r aist look smaller,
fitted jackets that pull away a bit from
the top of the hip and empire-waisted
shirts that help to emphasize the small
est part of her rib cage while camou
flaging her midsection.
Build a wardrobe that can outlast trends.
“Tamara had a lot of ’Bos stuff, a lot
of polyester, a lot of old-fashioned florals.
It was like she was shopping on a clear
ance rack from 1991,” Kelly says. Gamer
agrees: “My style was very outdated. I
wore bright colors, flowers, prints that
were not becoming. Now-1 know' to buy
classically tailored suits in neutral col
ore, then accent them with blouses that
pop.” That technique will keep Gamer’s
look fresh and current. “If peach is the
color next season or big polka dots are
the rage the season after that, she can
put tops under those suits that are going
to make them look fresh every year,”
Kelly says, ca
