I didn’t know I was ‘country’ until I went to Atlanta ]
The other day someone
asked me on the phone what
I was doing and I said, “Oh,
just messin and gommin”.
There was a pause from my
friend on the other end, and
then she asked, “What does
that mean?”
I< replied, “You know, doing
a little of this and a little of
that.”
I asked, “You’ve never
heard that phrase before?”
She said, “Never in my
life.”
Actually, I had not even
used that phrase in a long
time, but somehow it just
surfaced to the top, and I
spit it out. My momma used
to say “messin and gommin”
all the time when I was little
and I don’t remember any

Now, I can even understand
what “messin” means, but I
have no idea what “gommin”
is. It does have kind of a nice
ring to it, and goes well with
messin’, don’t you think?
There is also a word
that I use inappropriately
all the time. No, it’s not a
curse word, but I have been
known to use one of those on
occasion, too. This word is
“fixin”.
“What are you doing?”
someone asks.
I might reply, “I’m fixin to
go to town,” or “I’m fixin to
read a book.”
An English teacher once
told me that “fixin” is not
proper, so in order to speak
properly I’m “fixin” to stop
using “fixin”.

Remembering the troops
A group of retirees at Houston Springs are workng hard to make sure that America’s fightng men
and women know they are not forgotten, whether they are on foreign soil or hospitalized at the
Veterans Administration Hospital in Dublin.
They are participating in a program to make sure troops get Christmas cards with personal notes,
and are also taking part in the Adopt-A-Soldier program, which puts sponsors and soldiers in touch
by e-mail, and provides teddy bears tfor the children of the 3rd Infantry Division.
Organizers of the effort are Anne Pierce and Margaret Allen.
