4-H, hospice workers team op to create a lasting legacy
By CHARLOTTE
PERKINS
Journal Staff Writer
Ask Jean Rea about the
important influences on her
life, and there’s one thing
you can count on. She’ll tell
you about the 4-H club she
belonged to growing up poor
in Louisiana, and how much
she gained from the club.
“That’s where I learned to
set goals,” she says.
It’s also where she learned
to show livestock and to “put
up” food of every kind, which
led to a lifetime love of can
ning, pickling and baking,
and even cookbook compil
ing and food writing. (You
can read Jean Rea’s recipe
for Old-Fashioned Banana
Pudding on Page IB).
Along the way to 4-H
excellence, the young girl
won over 300 ribbons - some
blue, some red, some yellow,
some white - and treasured
them all.

After spending
Thanksgiving with the troops,
Chambliss, who serves on
the Senate Armed Services
Committee, said that he and
the other U.S. leaders on the
trip had three purposes: to get
a briefing from the military
personnel, to enforce a strong
message to the Iraqi govern
ment that “it’s time to step up
to the plate,” and to support
U.S. troops by sharing the
holiday with them.
He said that the group,
which included Sens. John
McCain, Joe Lieberman,
Lindsey Graham and John
Barasso, and Utah Gov. John
Huntsman talked with Iraq’s
Prime Minister Nouri al-
Maliki, and Vice President
Adil Abdul Mahdi, empha

the Bathists, members of the
party of executed dictator
Saddam Hussein, back into
the operations of the country.
Woman dies in car crash
Special to the Journal'
The Houston County Sheriffs Office, according to a
release, responded to a fatal car crash Monday on Georgia
247 just north of Wheelus St., at 12:08 p.m.
According to the release, a 2000 Volvo tractor being
operated by Kenneth Taylor of Macon was south-bound on
247. As he approached a slow moving unidentified pickup
hauling a utility trailer in front of him, he over applied
his brakes causing his tractor to spin around 180 degrees
and to slide anto the north-bound lane where he struck a
green 1996 Ford pickup truck. The pickup truck was being
operated by Lynn McCall and had a front seat passenger
identified as JoAnn Campbell.
Campbell and McCall were transported to the Perry
Hospital. Campbell died at the hospital as a result of her
injuries. McCall was in critical condition.
Charges, according to the release, will be made against
Taylor.

Off the cuff
Back home in
Georgia, Chambliss
had a few off the cuff
comments in addition to
talking points:
■ On the troops’
Thanksgiving dinner in
Iraq, which he shared,
he said the food was
excellent and that the
menu included corn
bread dressing, but “not
as good as my wife,
Julianne, makes.”
■ On traveling with
Presidential candidate
Sen. John McCain
- “He’s a rock star.”
■ On his pick of the
current Republican
presidential hopefuls
- “Whoever can beat
Hillary.”
He noted that the Iraqi
military forces are gaining in
strength.
“They’re getting better and
better,” he said.
Regarding the future of
troop withdrawal, Chambliss
said, “We need to finish the
job. I rely on the experts and
what I’m told is that a (pre
cipitous) withdrawal would
create chaos and a true civil
war.”
However, the senator
