The seven deadly sins
Man’s moral depravity is
exemplified by seven major
sins.
These seven transgressions against
God were first enumerated by Pope
Gregory in the
sixth century and
later satirized by
the poet Dante
Alighieri in his epic
poem “The Divine
Comedy.”

etousness), sloth (idleness, laziness),
wrath (anger), envy (jealousy) and
pride (vanity).
These sins never occur as a formal
list in the Bible; however, Proverbs
6:16-19 comes close: “There are six
things the Lord hates, seven that are
detestable to him: haughty eyes, a
lying tongue, hands that shed inno
cent blood, a heart that devises wick
ed schemes, feet that are quick to
rush into evil, a false witness who
pours out lies and a man who stirs up
dissension among brothers.”
Lust, according to a national poll,
was the biggest failing among respon
dents with a 35 percent ranking fol
lowed by anger at 18 percent.
Specific punishments were said by
Dante to await the perpetrator in the
hereafter: for Envy, the perpetrator

rats, snakes, spiders, and toads,
Sloth: thrown into snake pits, and
Pride: broken on the wheel.
Pride is at the heart of all sins. The
scripture states that “The Lord doth
hate a proud look,” and “Pride goeth
before destruction and a haughty
spirit before a fall.”
In Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress,”
a character named Mr. Loth-to-Stoop
offered to pay for his salvation and
was told that only by bending his
back and humbling himself before
God could he be saved. He refused
to do so. People today are too proud
to admit they are sinners and need
Christ.
Cain provided the classic example
of wrath. He killed his brother Abel
because he couldn’t control his tem

A common form of gluttony is over
indulgence in alcohol. Shakespeare

Alcohol takes over and destroys his
life.
Ed’s wife was guilty of gluttony. Her
overeating had caused her weight to
soar since their marriage. Ed slipped
up and forgot his wedding anniver
sary. His wife was furious.
She scolded Ed, saying, “Tomorrow
morning, I expect to find a gift in the
driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in 6
seconds, and it better be there.”
The next morning, Ed left for work
early. When his wife awakened, she
looked out the window, and saw a
medium-sized gift-wrapped box in
the middle of the driveway.
Quizzical, the wife put on her robe,
ran out to the driveway, and brought
the box back into the house. She
opened it and found a brand new
bathroom scale.
Ed’s obituary was in the paper the
next day.
As harmless as some situations may
appear, it often proves best that they
not be disturbed.
They can so easily turn into a disas
ter if we are not careful.
“Look after each other so that not
one of you will fail to find God’s best
blessing. Watch out that no bitterness
takes root among you, for as it springs
up it causes deep trouble, hurting
many in their spiritual lives. ”
