You see it can only be used
for equipment and/or train
ing - not salaries, Talton and
Wood both emphasized. The
plan right now, Talton said
was to spend however much
of it was needed to fund an
investigator position, recent
ly authorized by the commis
sion and/or his or her train
ing.
So, with any luck - plus
skill - there will be more
events like the one on Sept.
29, 2003 that led up to the
case award, an 80 percent
cut of the original amount of
$175,255. The delay, Talton
said, was due to appeals “and
all that.”
The whole thing started
when, on the aforementioned
date, Deputy Chad Payne,
who Talton said was now
with the Butts County Police
Department, of the Houston
County Sheriffs Office pulled
over a van he noted failed to
maintain its lane of travel
- crossing the dividing line
twice.
Police arrest 2 in connection with auto burglaries
Special to the Journal
According to a police report,
Officer Gravitt of the Warner
Robins Police Department
attempted to stop a black
2002 GMC Envoy Sunday
for not having the headlights
on. The driver, later identi
fied as 17-year-old Jakaria
Montford, ran from the vehi
cle and was arrested short
ly afterwards near Warner
Robins High School on South
Davis Drive. Montford,
according to the release, was
wearing a pair of gloves and
had two “dealership tags
and keys” inside his pock
ets. Several Eddie Wiggins
Pontiac drive-out tags were
also inside the Envoy and
Eddie Wiggins Pontiac con
firmed the vehicle had been
stolen from their lot.
As a result, Montford was
charged that evening with
Burglary, Theft by Taking
Motor Vehicle and addition-
The driver was identified
as John Robert Patino. He
had a Florida license, and
according to the police report,
it took little time for his story
to become suspicious. Payne
asked him if he was sleepy or
if he had been drinking. He
said no on both accounts. He
also had a passenger, later
identified as Gilbert Soler.
Patino said the two had been
to a race in Indianapolis and
were returning home, but
when Payne asked him who
owned the vehicle, he just
pointed in Soler’s direction
without physically saying his
name.
Payne then approached
Soler, still in the van at that
time, and asked for his iden
tification, as well as who
owned tlje van and proof
of ownership. Soler said it
belonged to a girlfriend.
At some point while all this
was going on, Deputy Eric
Barnett, who Talton said was
no longer on any police force
- he said he was on Peny’s
for some time - arrived.
He had a drug dog, which,
according to the report,
“made a positive alert to the
al traffic
charges. In
conjunction
with that,
Five Star
Chevrolet at
495 Watson
Blvd. has
had a num
ber of com
mercial bur-
glaries since the middle of
October and a total of nine
vehicles stolen in those bur
glaries.
An investigation, accord
ing to the report, revealed
Montford was committing
dealership burglaries with
Alexander Lester, a 30-year
old man who would arrange
and coordinate juveniles
and young adults to assist
him and a 16-year-old from
Warner Robins.
Several of the stolen vehi
cles had On-Star service,
which led to a Pontiac Grand

odor of narcotics.”
A subsequent search of
the van resulted in the depu
ties finding several bundles
of currency inside several
different items of clothing
packed in various pieces of
luggage, a large quantity
of currency hidden inside a
wooden box at the rear of
the van disguised as addi
tional speakers and a trace
amount of cocaine on the
floorboard in the rear pas
senger area.
And that in turn led to
today’s events - described as
an early Christmas present
by a gushing Talton.
“It’s money we wouldn’t
normally get but need,” he
said. “And we’re just so great
ful to the U.S. Attorney’s
office. We’ve never called on
them when they didn’t help
out.”
Wood pretty much echoed
that sentiment. “It all starts
at the local level,” Wood said.
“And we’ve always enjoyed
working with Houston
County. This large amount

of others what a great job
they’ve been doing.”
