Loved by Jesus
Parables to Ponder
ence came at the Lord's Supper in
which “the disciple, whom Jesus
loved” was sitting beside Jesus and
leaning close to the Master's breast.
The second occurred after Jesus had
commissioned Peter to greater ser
vice, saying “follow me.” Peter saw
“the disciple whom Jesus loved” fol
lowing behind them and asked Jesus
what the future held for John.
The mere thought of being loved by
Jesus would bring exhilaration to the
human heart. To be loved by the Son
of God would be the greatest compli
ment one could ever receive. Not
only would the love of Jesus offer
great consolation and encourage
ment in this life, but it would provide
the assurance of eternal life in the
life beyond.
But, wait just a minute. Doesn’t the
scripture state that Jesus also loves
us, that we are loved just as John
was? Yes, it does. In fact, Ephesians
3:17-18 tells us it is impossible “to
grasp how wide and long and high
and deep is the love of Christ.” I
have fond remembrances as a small
child at Vacation Bible School sing
ing about Jesus’ love. The lyrics went
something like this: “Jesus loves me,
this I know, for the Bible tells me so.

Little ones to Him belong; they are
weak but He is strong. Yes, Jesus
loves me! ” In reality, Jesus loved us
long before we loved him. "While we
were still sinners, Christ died for us,”
attests Romans 5: 8.
Jesus forged loving relationships
with His followers during His public
ministry. A case in point was his great
love for Martha and her sister Mary
and their brother Lazarus. He visited
their home in Bethany frequently.
Once He washed Mary’s feet with
expensive perfume. When Lazarus
died, Jesus was so grief-stricken that
he wept. In a broader sense, it was
evident that Jesus loved all men as
He healed the sick and the afflicted,
exorcised demons, and raised the
dead. He also enjoyed the company
of little children and encouraged
them to gather around Him and to sit
in His lap. His love for the downtrod
den was never more evident than
when He spoke at the synagogue in
Nazareth. I have come “to preach
the good news to the poor,” Jesus
declared, "to heal the brokenhearted,
to proclaim release to the captives, to
recover sight to the blind, and to set
at liberty those who are oppressed.”
The supreme proof of Jesus’ love
was His death on the cross to pay
the price for our sins: The scripture
states that “Christ loved us and gave
himself for us.” How do we receive
Jesus’ love? Jesus himself provides
the answer: “Whoever has my com
mands and obeys them, he is the
one who loves me. He who loves
me will be loved by my Father, and I
too will love him and show myself to
him."

Civitan International Clergy
Appreciation Week
fMore than 60 years ago, four men
hiade the ultimate sacrifice in a
time of world war. The sacrifice
(of their lives, witnessed by many
feliow soldiers, inspired Civitans
in Albuguergue, New Mexico,
and later, Civitan International,
to establish a time to honor all
clergy. A week in February is
observed annually by Civitan
world wide to show appreciation to
the clergy of all faiths serving their
communities.
The time of the observance was
selected to coincide with the
sinking of the troopship USS
Dorchester on February 3, 1943.
At that time, four chaplains will
ingly gave their lifejackets to sol
diers who did not have one, thus
sacrificing their lives so that others
could live.
Pushing through the treacherous
waters with 905 American service
men aboard bound for Greenland,
the Dorchester left its convoy a
few hours short of its destination,
not an unusual maneuver. A Nazi
submarine, stalking the ship unde
tected, took this opportunity to
fire a torpedo straight toward the
ship’s flank. The missile struck
amid ship and exploded in the
boiler room. Many on board died
Instantly. Some were trapped
below deck. Others, jolted from
their bunks, half asleep, clam
bered to reach the decks of the
stricken vessel. The ship, taking

"Let the spirit move you"
unsuspecting person would receive
the call, give the answer and be
declared a lucky winner. A new con
test was then begun, giving others the
opportunity of winning.
If we live in hope of winning earthly
prizes, we will experience many dis
appointments, because the majority
of winners are selected at random
Nevertheless, a great reward is ir
store for all who wait, watch, and are
ready for the return of Christ.
It is not necessary to own a tele
phone, watch the television, or knov
a secret phrase that changes daily
Neither are winners selected at ran
dom.
It is a must, however, that we be
ready at any given moment, because
the time is unknown, even to those
who live in hope of His return.
“Be ye therefore ready also: for the
Son of man cometh at an hour wher
ye think not.” (Luke 12:40
on water rapidly, began listing

reasons prevented use of dis
tress flares, escort vessels, still
close enough to assist, pushed
on into the darkness, unaware
that the Dorchester was sinking.
Overcrowded lifeboats capsized;
rafts drifted away before anyone
could reach them.
On deck, amid confusion and ter
ror, Army Chaplains George L.
Fox, Alexander D. Goode, Clark
V. Poling and John P. Washington
(one Catholic, one Jewish and two
Protestant) moved about calming
frightened men, directing bewil
dered soldiers to lifeboats, and
distributing life jackets with calm
precision. Soon, the supply of
jackets was exhausted, yet four
young soldiers, afraid and without
life vests, stood waiting. Quickly
the chaplains stripped off their
own and forced them upon the
young soldiers.
The Dorchester sank beneath the
icy waters of the North Atlantic on
Febuary 3, 1943, carrying with it
the four chaplains and some 675
servicemen.
Crossroads Civitan would like to
honor all our clergy and to say
thanks for the unselfish ways you
minister to the people in this com
munity.
