This rivalry match-up usu
ally produces a tight, back
and-forth battle, back- and
forth meaning the soccer ball
usually goes from a Warner
Robins player to a Houston
County player to a Demon
to a Bear and so on. Six min
utes into play Hoskins made
the first save after Warner
Robins deflected a Houston
attack led by Karl Chester,
Rickie Wimsatt and Josh
Salmon.
Another defensive stand
out for the Demons in the
first half was Matt Drapeau.
Wisniewski, meanwhile,
saved a long shot from Bear
stopper Dallas Hall. Chester
challenged Wisniewski one
on-one with the keeper win
ning at 23 minutes to go, and
on the resulting corner kick
Hall took a head shot over
the goal.
Wisniewski added another
save at 20:25, and he dove
on a ball as Houston tried a
little misdirection on a free
kick just outside the box.
The lone goal of the con
test went to Whelan, who
substituted in just minutes

“Again, we had a little bit
of luck,” said Bailey. “But we
made it happen. They tried
to clear it out, and Trevor

put it in the net. It was one of
those things you can’t coach.
They do what they’re told to

D.J. Jones had one of
Warner Robins’ missed
opportunities as his shot, on

went at a wide angle at 5:21.
Wisniewski came up with
one more save as Houston’s

Vince Stewart of the Bears

Alex Baughman and Chester

In a soccer match-up where
both teams are best known
for making great offense their
best defense, actual on-the
ball defending played a big
role for the Warner Robins
High Demonettes Tuesday.
Warner Robins won the
battle of Region 1-AAAAA
undefeated girls teams at
Houston County High; the
Demonettes improved to 4-0
with the Lady Bears drop
ping to 3-1.
“They have a lot of skill
up top,” said Warner Robins
girls coach Phil Daly about
his rival opposition. “Their
two forwards are pretty fast.
In the second half (Kierston
Wharton) was getting behind
us and putting more pres
sure on us.
“But we had speed in the
back, too. I just had to move
it around a little bit. We were
able to neutralize their speed
up top. The first (Houston)
goal, it was a good play by
them. The second goal ...
what are you going to do? It
bounces around ... they are a
good team and they are going
to put pressure on you, and
the more pressure you put,
it’s going to go in eventually.
“5-2, I’ll take that any
day.”
The ultimate deciding goal
for the Demonettes came
from a player, Kelila Lincoln,
who normally plays a for
ward slot but was used by
Daly in primarily a defensive
mode because of her speed.
But Lincoln, at 27:50 of the
first half, kicked the ball
high from about 40 yards
away. She put enough arc
and distance on the ball for
the keeper to miss it and put
Warner Robins up 2-1.
“I’m fortunate that I have
a lot of girls that I could
play in different spots,” said
Daly. “I think the sun may
have been in the girl’s eyes,
but it just worked out in our
favor.”
Tori Dukes had Warner
Robins’ first goal at 36:45.
Houston County came back
about four minutes later when
Demonette keeper Kristen
Graham saved a shot with
her hands. The ball stayed
loose and was recovered by
Houston’s Gracie Preston on
the left side. Preston passed
outside to Kayla Beitler, who

“I have a bunch of seniors,”
said Daly about his team’s
response to this big- game
challenge. “They’ve been
through some of this before.
It being a rival always helps
get the juices flowing a bit
more. They knew they had to
