Thera'll Never Be Peece In Iraq
Parables to Ponder
when
Muhammad, the founder and proph
et of Islam, died in 632 A.D. For
his successor, a leadership coun
cil chose Muhammad’s father-in-law,
Abu Bakr. Those who accepted Abu
Bakr became “Sunnis.” In opposition,
a minority sect believed the succes
sor should be a direct descendant
of Muhammad. In this case, his
cousin and son-in-law, Ali, was cho
sen. Supporters of Ali became the
“Shiites.”
Because of these doctrinal dif
ferences, the Sunnis and the Shiites
have been fighting each other for 14
centuries, bombing mosques, assas
sinating imams and priests, and killing
their countrymen. In current times,
Sunni leader Saddam Hussein con
tinued the reign of terror, persecuting
and killing thousands of Shiites who
revolted against his regime.
Since the Iraq war began in March
2003, the U.S. has increased its force
to 140,000 troops. Most are serv
ing multiple tours without furlough.
The body count has been stagger
ing. Almost 4,000 American soldiers
have been killed and another 60,000
wounded. Additionally, 700,000 Iraqis
and 4 million refugees have died in
the conflict.
The financial drain on the United
States has been alarming. We are
currently spending approximate
ly two “billion” dollars a week, and
to-date, some 500 “billion” dollars
have been expended since the war
began. A Nobel-prize winning econo
mist projected the cost of the Iraq

war will exceed 3 “trillion” dollars
($3,000,000,000,000). This money
could be used to help ensure health
care for all Americans, to boost sol
vency of Social Security and Medicare,
and to improve our national infrastruc
ture. The high cost of this war is the
root cause for our country’s current
economic woes. These outlays are
choking off economic recovery at a
time when the nation is drifting into
a recession, people are losing their
jobs and homes, and the rising cost of
gasoline is wrecking havoc on family
budgets. To make matters worse, the
U.S. is forced to borrow money from
China and other totalitarian nations
just to keep our country running and
to pay the interest (over S4OO “billion”
annually) on our staggering national
debt ($ 9 Trillion”). This war will bank
rupt our country. Past failures in Korea
(33,741 battle deaths) and Vietnam
(47,424) have demonstrated conclu
sively that the United States pays a
prohibitively high cost in attempting to
be the world’s policeman.
Religion has fueled wars since
Joshua invaded Canaan. The Jews
and Arabs, both claiming to be the
rightful heirs of their common progeni
tor Abraham, have battled over the
Holy Land for three thousand years.
Neither will there be peace in Iraq
where Sunni and Shiite factions battle
for supremacy. Both democratic pres
idential contenders Barrack Obama
and Hillary Clinton have made cam
paign promises to withdraw our troops
from Iraq. The Republican nominee
John McCain, who supports the war,
will have a hard sell convincing the
American people that our troops must
stay in Iraq. During these uncertain
times when Islamic terrorists seek to
destroy us, the prayer of the psalmist
for Jerusalem applies equally to the
United States: “May those who love
God be secure. May there be peace
within your walls and security within
your citadels.”

Name Change For Area Church
We would like to announce the
changing of our church name. The
church formerly known as, “New
Covenant Church of God” is now
named the “Perry Crossroads Church
of God.”
When the church was started some
fifty years ago, the original name was
“Perry Church of God." It was a simple
way of stating that the Church of God
existed to minister to Perry. The Perry
Church of God grew and progressed
under the leadership of Rev. Charles
Lamb for some 30 years. Rev. Lamb
is still a member of the church and is
still providing wisdom and insight to
the church.
In 1998, the church changed its
name to the “New Covenant Church
of God.” The phrase “New Covenant”
referred to the life that Christ prom
ised to believers.
Now in 2008, under the leadership
of Rev. Ryan Herrington, the church
is moving into a new direction and a
new name was desired by the ohurch.
The church body wanted a name that
represented their history and heritage
as the “Perry Church of God” while
stating the new vision of the church.
In a vote, the church body decided
to readopt the “Perry Church of God”
and add the word “Crossroads” in the
name to signify the newness of the

church. The word “Crossroads" was
chosen due to Perry’s nickname being
the "crossroads of Georgia.” The
church also liked the name because
it has a spiritual implication as well.
Along with the pastor, the church
body desires all to find their way to
the cross and find Jesus Christ as
their personal Savior. The new motto,
“where every road leads to the cross”
suggests that very desire.
The pastor and members invite
everyone to come for Morning
Worship starting at 10:30 AM and
Discipleship at 6:00 PM on Sunday’s.
The Discipleship focus is geared
towards explaining the foundations of
Christianity in a relevant way. Classes
are designed to deal with the subjects
of finances and marriage according to
the Bible, as well as theology and his
tory of the Bible. These classes are
designed to help people grow in the
understanding of the Word of God.
Wednesday night services are sched
uled for 7:00 PM each week. The
church offers ministries to youth, chil
dren, college aged, men, women, and
senior adults. The church’s desire is
to get involved in the community and
to show the love of Jesus to all.
Everyone is invited to come out and
be a part of the new “Perry Crossroads
Church of God.”
