in the community that has
promoted a better under
stand of the rule of law,
encouraged respect for the
law and the court, stimulat
ed a sense of civic respon
sibility or contributed to
good government in the
community.

Unemployment rises again

The Georgia Department of Labor report
ed last week that thle state’s seasonally
adjusted unemployment rate rose to 6.3
percent in August, the highest in 15 years.
The jobless rate was up 1.9 percentage
points from 4.4 percent at this same time
last year. During the same period, the num
ber of payroll jobs decreased 57,700 or nine
tenths of one percentage point.
Warner Robins was down 200, or three
tenths of one percentage point, from 58,800
to 58,600.
The last time Georgia’s unemployment
rate reached this level was in March of
1993, and there has not been an over-the
year decline in jobs this great since June
of 2003. The state rate remains above the
national rate of 6.1 percent for the seventh
straight month. At present, 310,683 unem
ployed Georgians are looking for work.

Talton spent several years
working with the Warner
Robins Police Department,
Houston County Sheriffs
office and most recently
serves as Chief of Centerville
Police Department.
The award was presented
at a luncheon at the Green
Derby restaurant in Perry.

The August unemployment rate was up
three-tenths of one percentage point from
a revised 6.0 percent in July. The number
of jobs increased 8,100 from July to August,
up because of seasonal fluctuations due to
school employees returning to existing jobs
following the summer break.
The over-the-year job losses came across
the-board in manufacturing, construction,
trade, and services.

Award plaque that hangs in
the Superior Courthouse in
Perry.

Flu vaccine available soon at
Houston County Health Dept.

Officials from the Houston
County Health Department
announce this week that sea
sonal flu vaccinations will be
available starting Wednesday.
According to a release, there
will be two types of flu vac
cine available: the flu shot,
which will cost $25 and
Flu Mist, a vaccine that is
sprayed up the nose, which
will cost $35. Flu vaccines
are available at no charge to
those on Medicaid, Peachcare
and Medicare Part B.
The health department is
open 8 a.m. to 4:30 pm. No
appointment is necessary.
Everybody is encouraged
to be vaccinated, but particu
larly:
People 50 years old or
older
Children six months to 18
years old
Adults and children with
chronic health conditions
Women who will be at any
stage of pregnancy during flu
season
People who can spread the
flu to those at high risk (i.e.
caregivers)
Healthcare workers
Anyone who wants to pre
vent getting the flu
“As in years past, the flu
vaccine is the best way to
prevent getting the flu,” said
Debbie Liby,' County Nurse
Manager. “This year, with
the two different types of
vaccine, we are hopeful that
even more people will be will
ing to get the vaccine.”
Liby said she would also like
to see more children vaccinat
ed against the flu. “Children
are the main source of the
spread of infection with influ
enza. Unfortunately, only 30
percent of children get their
flu vaccine. With Flu Mist,
you can have your child vac
cinated without the pain of
the needle.”
The Health Department is'
also making plans to offer
the vaccine at different loca

Liby added, “We are also
excited to announce that we
will be offering gift certifi
cates for people who would
like to buy a flu vaccine for

from the disease.”
As always, anyone can get
a flu vaccine from the Health
Department without a pre
scription. “We want to make
it as easy as possible for
