Perry Middle softball team
repeats as county champs
By MICHAEL DEESE
Perry Middle School Eighth
Grade Softball Coach
We just finished off our
second season winning our
second county championship
in two years.
This is something that
has not happened at Perry
Middle School.
We finished off the season
with a record with 12 wins
and 1 loss, and in the past
two years our record has
been 25 wins and 1 loss.
We scored 142 runs this
year and only allowed 14.
This shows the hard work
these girls have spent not
just on offense but also
defensively and pitching. We
were playing three gameg
a week for the last three
weeks of the season.
The girls chose to start
practicing on Saturdays.
These girls were playing
softball six days a week for
the last three weeks of the
season.
Still we had no students to
fail a class at the end of the
first nine weeks.
This is a great bunch of
girls who excel at both ath
letics and academics. The
two of which that stick out
the most are Mary Jan Lollis
and Anna Swartz.
Mary Jan is a exceptional
leader both on the field and
in the classroom. She takes

Gates at Silver Dollar Raceway open at

ished the season with only
two B’s.
This is even more excep
tional being that she was a
regular starter at catcher
and also pitched two games.
She was a tremendous
asset to our team both offen
sively, defensively, as well
as leading several practices.
Mary Jan is a very vocal
leader and plays in all 4
sports that girls may com
pete in at Perry Middle.
Anna Swartz is as sweet
a girl as you have ever met.
“never” does she complain
or give you any less than
100 percent. She was a great
pitcher, and pitched in six
games this season and had
not lost a game as a pitcher
in two years.
Academically she made all
As except for one B. She
excels not just at softball,
but is also a leader at soccer
and track.
Now about the playoffs,
We started off the playoffs
against Northside Middle
School.
Anna Swartz pitched, as
well as hit two homeruns..
The whole team did very
well both offensively and
defensively and we ended
up advancing with a score of
14 to 2.
Next round we played

The Mell Tolleson Cup is

players. It is always really
competitive but the girls
love it.
It ended up being a pitch
ing duel between their star'
pitcher, Abby Cook, and ours
(Savannah Ransom). Very
few hits or walks in this
game. We ended up winning
an exciting 3-0.
Next we had to play the
Championship which was
that Friday against Bonaire.
The only four games they
had lost in the last two years
had been to us, the only
game we had lost had been
to them.
Since we were the home
team, I chose to have it at
the high school. It is a great
experience for both teams,
they have a really nice setup
there, and Coach (Lome)
Tucker (the new Perry high
coach) was really great to let
us use it.
I pitched Savannah
Ransom again, against their
star pitcher (who I can not
remember her name but
can find out later today). We
jumped out to good lead with
a four run second inning.
We knew that we had
