Experiencing love and hope on horseback
By AARON MARTENS
Journal Contributor
Have you ever felt the free
dom of getting on the back
of a horse? That is the feel
ing Ron Long of Pineview is
hoping to give people with
his new ministry.
Sassy Saddles Gate of
Hope Ministries is a non
profit organization special
izing in adults and children
with special needs, but there
will be activities for all.
Whether it is hands on care
or getting on the back of a
horse, the ministry hopes to
serve everyone with the love
of Jesus Christ.
Long’s idea came about
in different ways: first
through his love of horses
and his youth group at Mt.
Pleasant Baptist Church,
and secondly, from the
help and encouragement
of four very special volun
teers: Leah Cihak, Rachael
Lilley, Katie Bennett, and
Jon Hancock. Not only is
Long very involved with the
youth group at Mt. Pleasant
Baptist Church, he is also
a volunteer firefighter for
Pulaski County.
Long’s dream for Sassy
Saddles became a reality
only a few months ago. It
has been such a blessing see
ing it grow in such a short
amount of time.
Sassy Saddles has applied
for grants from the govern
ment; however, they need
donations for this dream
to flourish. Long wants to
build an arena, a round pen,
and a barn on his property.
He hopes to have it accom
plished in the next year and
a half. Mr. W. A. Harvey
and daughter-in-law Lisa
May allow Long to use their
nearby property for trail rid
ing. “Long is depending on
the Lord’s help with this
and the Lord has not let him
down yet.”
Long and Leah Cihak are
working on certification in
hippotherapy, a physical
therapy treatment utilizing
horses’ movements for the
physically challenged. Sassy
Saddles has a trained and
professional volunteer staff
which is prepared for the
growth of the program.
“This has always been a
dream of mine,” says Leah
Cihak. “I love horses and
helping people and I believe

Why cats scratch
Normal behavior sometimes a problem
Paws for Pets
“Why does my cat
scratch?” is a question fre
quently asked of me by
clients. My response has
been that scratching is a
normal feline behavior for
the maintenance of their
claws as well as for mark
ing their territories.
After digging a little deep
er, mostly from work done
by Dr. Debra Horwitz and
Dr. Grady Landsberg, both
veterinary behavioral spe
cialists, I decided to write
these articles to hopefully
better explain why scratch
ing is considered “normal”
for cats and to provide tips
to help control this some
times destructive behavior.
Although scratching is
considered normal and
does serve to shorten and
condition the claws, other
important reasons cats
scratch are tp mark their
territory (both visibly and
with the scent of the foot
pads), to stretch, to play
and to threaten. Some
cats may actually increase
their territorial scratching
in situations of anxiety or
conflict.
Remember, this is anxi
ety and conflict as they see
it, not as we might see it.
A common example is an
outdoor cat coming near
the or door of
your home, creating con
flict within your indoor
cat, when you may not
consider the second cat a
problem.
For cats that live pri
marily outdoors, scratch
ing, is seldom a problem
for owners. Their scratch
ing is usually directed at
prominent objects such as
tree trunks or fence posts.
Play swatting with other
cats seldom leads to injury
because cats have fairly
thick skin and coat for pro
tection.

When play does get a little
rough, most cats are pretty
good at sorting things out
themselves. Occasionally
rough play or territorial
fighting does lead to inju
ries or abscesses that would
require veterinary atten
tion.
Cats that live primarily
or exclusively indoors run
into disfavor with their
owners when they begin
to scratch furniture, walls,
and doors or when they use
their claws to hang from the
drapes. These exclusive
ly indoor cats will usually
require an area inside the
home for scratching, climb
ing, stretching and play.
With a good understand
ing of cat behavior and a
little bit of effort, it should
be possible to prevent or
avoid most clawing prob
lems, even for those cats
that live indoors.
How can I stop this
unwanted scratching behav
ior is the logical next ques
tion. It is impractical to
expect cats to stop scratch
ing entirely.
Cats that go outside may
be content to do all their
scratching outdoors, but
the urge may still arise
when back inside. Cats that
spend their time indoors
will, of course, need outlets
for their scratching and
marking behaviors, so don’t
be surprised to come home
and find your can playfully
dangling from your drapes.
While it may not be pos
sible to stop a cat from
scratching, it should be pos
sible to direct the scratch
ing, climbing and hard play
to appropriate areas.
Building or designing a
user friendly scratching
post, providing a regular
daily routine of social play,
object play and exercise,
and restriction from prob
lem areas will usually be
adequate to deal with most
scratching problems.
Due to
we will td“&nswer the
following questions in next
week’s article:
How do. I design a scratch
ing area for my cat? How do
I get my cat to use the post?
What are my options if my
cat continues to scratch my
furniture?
