Making reading fun
Red Ribbon Week a huge success at Perry Middle School
When I taught high
school, I spent a
lot of time observ
ing the student’s behavior
and patterns.
What made one student
more successful than anoth
er? What I found was noth
ing new, but it did confirm all
the data I have read. Those
students who love to read
had the highest averages and
did far better in school than
Make your computer run faster
Is your computer slug
gish, taking longer
and longer to get up
those applications you use
and taking forever to shut
down or start up? Add more
memory, or RAM, to your
computer.
It’s officially called
Dynamic Random Access
Memory. The dynamic part
means it has to be refreshed
or recharged while your com
puter is running. It also has
to do with the fact if your
computer loses power, then
any data you were work
ing on will be lost if you
have not saved it to the hard
drive.
When not in use, pro
grams and data are held in
mass storage, which usually
means a hard drive, a CD
ROM or some other device
that can hold data when
the computer is turned off.
When you load a program by
clicking on it in Windows (or
Mac), the program is cop
ied from the mass storage
and loaded into RAM. It is
stored in RAM so your CPU
has faster access to the pro
gram.
The more RAM you have
the larger amount of data
can be stored, which equals
the faster your computer
will run. If your CPU has
to go to the hard drive to
get data, that is a very slow
process cause it not only has
farther to go, but it has to
find it among the millions
of pieces of data. So RAM
was invented for that very
purpose, to have the data
ready for the CPU as soon as
it needs it.
Before you get RAM, you
obviously need to know how
much RAM you currently
have in your PC.
Every version of Windows
works the same way. Find
“My Computer” on your
desktop and right-click it
with your mouse to select
the Properties. Click on
the Properties line and a
Microsoft Window will
appear.
It tells you how much
RAM you currently have
on your system and more
importantly the type.
Finding the right RAM for
your system is a little more
complicated these days.
Back in the day, RAM was
all the same. You went to the
computer store and said give
me 4 Megabytes of RAM,
opened the lid and installed
it.
Today, there are different
types of RAM with names
like SDRAM, DDR, DDR2,
etc. The best way to find
out what kind of RAM your
system uses is to go to your
computer manufacturer’s
website. Look for service
manuals.

By the time you read this
(barring a repeat of the 2000
Florida snafu), we will have
a new president. Perhaps
you voted for the winner,
perhaps not. But if you
voted, you were part of a
record turnout to elect our
nation’s leader for the next
four years.
Advance voting was heavy,
with people standing in lines
for hours to exercise their
right and their duty to cast
their ballots. This speaks
well for both democracy
and our republican form

Normally you type in the
model number and name of
your computer and you will
be directed to the appro
priate manual. Inside that
manual it will tell you the
specific type of RAM and the
maximum amount that can
be used. RAM is fairly cheap
these days so always go for
the maximum.
The best prices for RAM
are over the Internet. One of
the best places I have found
is www.nextag.com. You
identify the type of RAM you
need in their search engine
and it will bring up a list of
prices and stores comparing
the prices and you choose
which one you want.
As stated before, always
get the maximum amount
of RAM that you can afford.
You and your computer will
be thankful.

computer is pretty straight

Last week, Perry Middle
School dedicated an entire
ly give it a try. Once you see
how easy it is you’re gonna
get angry if you paid some
one at the computer store
S7O for about two minutes
of work.
First, open the case of
your computer. You will usu
ally two slots filled with one
stick of RAM each. Push
down on the sidetabs hold
ing the RAM and it will ease
right out. Or if there are
empty slots then your RAM
will be placed there.
When picking up your
RAM it is extremely impor
tant that you do not pass
any electrostatic electricity
to the RAM stick. Before
picking up your RAM,
ground yourself by touch
ing any metal part of your
computer. Then pick up the
RAM holding the edges only.
Do not touch any of the pins
on the bottom or the middle
part of the RAM. Then slide
the RAM sticks down into
the slots. Close the lid and
start your computer.
That’s it you’re done. You
will see a marked improve
ment in speed.
So if you’re computer has
started to run slower and
slower, try giving it a boost
with some extra RAM. It
will make your computing
experience much more sat
isfying.
