of government. (Note how
I worked both parties in
there. Very political.)
Being president of the
United States of America is
no easy job. Being the leader
of the free world and the
most powerful person on the
planet should quickly daunt
nearly all of us. The mantle
of office wears heavily on
those who don it. Compare
a picture of any president at
the beginning of his term(s)
in office to a photograph
at the end. The result is
much more than a few years
of age. Perhaps what wears
most on the chief executive
are the expectations. And
for this the candidates them
selves have to be somewhat
responsible. They set them
selves up as a combination
of Moses, Superman, and
Santa Claus; all things to all
people and all of it good.
Lower taxes? Of course.
More government services?
Check. All with a balanced
budget? Indeed. In this elec
tion there seemed to be less
discussion of policies and
principles than ever before.
It was all about money:
where it would come from
and where it would go.
A more sensible person
tackling the job (and perhaps
those are the ones quickly
daunted) would lay out pri

Of course, it’s not that
simple in politics. Keep it
general, keep it vague, talk
about plans, make everyone
think that there’s something
in it for them, but don’t get
into those irritating details.
Never, ever say, “That’s
something the Government
shouldn’t be involved in.
The citizens will have to take
care of it themselves.” That
would make the candidate
seem cold, uncaring, and
unelectable. Government
needs to be warm and cuddly.
Would Santa tell you that
you can’t have that puppy
for Christmas? No, he’d just
smile and say, “We’ll see.”
One vote for Santa.
When government was
small - something that
Republicans used to hold
dear - it was easier to hold
back. But now the govern
ment is omnipresent, our
votes seem to be weighed in
dollars and not sense. Will
this candidate get me a job?
Let me keep more of my
money? Get me money from
somewhere else? Subsidize
something that makes life
easier for me?
Let’s hope enough voters
went to the polls to deter
mine which candidate would
best lead the nation, and
not just the one that would
do the most for those vot
ers. Our government is sup
posed to temper the will of

Everyone voting for one’s
