Westfield’s Chris Meaders trips up a Deerfieid-Windsor runner in the GISA AAA state tournament championship game Friday in Albany.

For Westfield’s football
program to get another shot
at Deerfieid-Windsor on a
totally dry field, it’ll have to
wait another year.
For Westfield’s football

If the pattern for Region
1-AAAAA boys basketball
is “they didn’t lose any
body” or “they have every
body back,” no team fits the
description better than the
Houston County High Bears
of second-year head coach
Jody Dean.
No, Dean didn’t have any
seniors in his first season in
the lead position of Houston
County basketball. It was,
and still is, basically a team
he had as junior varsity bas
ketball coach, and now he
has a chance to see what
that group will do as the
experienced leaders (there
are seven seniors on the
2008-09 roster) of a club try
ing to return the program to
the state tournament.
Among the lessons learned
from the previous season,
a season where Houston
County didn’t make it to
state competition after a
fast start to the 1-AAAAA
schedule, Dean said the big
gest ones were how to play
together and play at the
state’s highest level.
“We’ve been working, lift
ing weights since March,”
said Dean about the Bears’
off-season. “We played all
during June, and since
we got back (to school) in

On another rainy Friday
night at Webb Stadium
in Albany, the Deerfieid-
Windsor Knights had all of
their first-half breaks hold
up and defeated Westfield
17-12 for the 2008 AAA title.
The Hornets of veteran head
coach Ronnie Jones had
more total yards and first
downs on this occasion, but

turnover margin - worked

as the difference-maker for
the home team.
Much like the regular-sea
son game on Oct. 17, the one
that determined first place
in Region 3-AAA and essen
tially the host for this con
test, inclement weather both
before and during play was
as much a story as ainything
related to football. Deerfieid-
Windsor won the first meet

final seconds of regulation.
The rematch also wasn’t
determined until a Knight
pass interception with 13
seconds left to play.
For its efforts, the Hornets
had 236 total yards, and
unlike in the semifinal win
over Stratford Academy in
Macon one week before,
there was a near even distri
bution between running and
passing. Quarterback Casey
SECTION: B
Young had a 68-yard touch
down run, which was more
than half of the team’s 132
yards on the ground.
The tandem of Young and
sophomore Wesley Rust
were 7-for-15 passing for
104 yards, 90 coming in the
second half. The Knights,
though, picked off two pass
es in the fourth quarter.
