Ashley Gray the perfect choice for Erskine Homecoming Court
I was not the least bit
surprised when I heard
that Ashley Gray had
been voted by the student
body at Erskine College in
South Carolina to represent
them on their Homecoming
court.
I taught Ashley in middle
school and not once did I
ever hear her say an unkind
word about anyone. What do
people think of when they
vote on a Homecoming rep
resentative? They think of
someone kind, sweet and
beautiful. Ashley posseses
all of those qualities both
inside and out.
A 2005 graduate of The
Westfield School, Ashley
chose to attend Erskine
College in Due West, S.C.,
after a long process search
ing for a small college with a
Christian environment.
After speaking with Perry’s
own local celebrity, Jackie
Cooper, an Erskine alum,
Ashley and her parents,
Janna and Steve Gray decid
ed to visit Erskine. They
immediately fell in love with
the Erskine environment
Getting the most power from your laptop
One thing you don’t
want when you are
taking your laptop
on a trip is for it to run out
of power before you get to
use it. There are ways to
manage the power of your
laptop to get the most out
of it for the longest possible
amount of time when you
don’t have a plug-in nearby.
It may be the poor qual
ity of the battery causing
your power to run out after
30 minutes when it used to
run for a couple of hours.
Manufacturers make three
types of batteries for porta
ble PCs and each battery has
its own needs and quirks.
A better understanding of
what they are will allow you
to spot and fix battery prob
lems.
The Nickel-Cadium batter
ies were the first batteries
made for mobile PCs. The
most irritating was some
thing called battery memory.
You could not recharge this
battery without it first being
completely discharged.
If you did, then over time,
the amount of time it kept
your laptop charged went
from two hours to 30 min
utes. To prevent problems
the batteries had to be dis
charged completely before
each recharging.

But recharging was tricky
because there was no way
to tell when the battery was
fully charged. This caused
batteries to be replaced fre

been some improvements.
The Nickel Metal Hydride
was the second generation
of battery and is still quite
common today. Basically,
they are the same as the

Now in her senior year,
Ashley plans to graduate in

Soft spoken, loving and

this January she will do an

For the past two summers,

memory problems. They
can be recharged anytime

periods of time.
The most common bat
tery today is the Lithium

ful, completely immune to
memory problems and hold
a charge twice as long as the
Nickel Metal Hydride.
However the down side is
they cannot be recharged as
many times as their pre
decessors. Most people are
willing to accept that in
exchange for longer periods
between charges.
The most current tech

is estimated that it could

40 hours. This technology
is still a few years away but

faith. She said Ashley has
a unique ability to remain
focused on the Lord and find
laughter to get her through
the rough times.
Ashley has had her share
of'rough times. Her senior
year of high school, she was
hospitalized for six weeks
after contracting the staph
infection, MRSA, which
attacked the lymph-node
system in her neck requiring
major surgery. The infection
has returned twice during
college requiring weeks of
hospitalization each time.
Through it all, Ashley has
kept her faith, smile and
deep care for others.
What a wonderful affir

Homecoming Court of her

college she so truly loves.

Knowing a little about
power management will also
go a long way in helping to
keep your laptop going. The
problem with early laptops
is they needed power con
tinuously. For example, the
hard drive would keep spin
ning whether or not it was
being accessed. The LCD
panel would keep a display
even when the user walked
away from the machine.
This caused laptops to over
heat and components to fail
prematurely.
Today there are power sav
ings modes that come with
the software. It is broken
down into different stages
of power. The computer will

being used.
In the first stage, the CPU
stops executing instructions
and the processor flushing
out any pending actions. But
power is still provided to the
CPU and memory. All other
devices not being used are
powered down.
The next stage is called
Standby. The computer only
supplies power to memory.
Because of this, and because
all applications are stored in
RAM, when you bring the
computer out of this state
you can start right where
you left off. This level is also
called Suspend to RAM.
The third stage is called
Hibernation. In Hibernation
mode all of the information
in RAM memory is stored
onto your hard drive and the
power to RAM is powered
off as well. This means you
can still work from where

you left off, but it will take a
while longer for the applica
tions to become available.
The good news is that since
all of the information was
saved to your hard drive, if
a power loss occurred, your
information will not be lost.
The last stage is called
soft off. This is where you
click on shutdown on your
computer. All programs
running the background
are shut down, memory is
flushed and the computer is
shutdown.
Understand that because
there are so many programs
running in the background it
is never a good idea to shut
down by using the power but
ton. This causes programs to
become corrupted and will
cause problems with your
computer.
