Christmas prayers for a 'country boy'
In a previous column I
wrote about the “Make
A Wish” party given
in honor of Luke Campbell.
At the time, Luke was in
the maintenance stage of his
long battle with t-cell lym
phoma.
The party was a huge suc
cess filled with much-need
ed laughter for family and
friends.
Two days later, however,
Luke began having chills
and running a fever. When
his fever did not break, he
was rushed to Egleston
where after many tests, he
was given devastating news:
His cancer had returned
- this time in the form of
Leukemia.
After being told Luke
would have to have a bone
marrow transplant, several
s someone watching your computer? Viruses, spyware
Hardly a day goes
by when someone
isn’t attacked by
a new virus on his or her
computer system. Everyone
is familiar with stories of
a virus entering the hard
drive and deleting every
thing on it. But there also
other more subtle programs
that can record every key
stroke you make and then
use that to steal credit card
information. Finally there
are some programs that are
distributed that are just a
pain to deal with.
For instance, not allowing
you to save a file any longer
or the reverse not allow
ing you to open a file any
longer.
This is not only a prob
lem for personal computer
users but businesses take
the brunt of these attacks
and the bigger the business
the harder people with mali
cious intent try to sabotage
them.
This is especially true
.with any business that runs
Windows. Windows gets the
most attacks because they
are the largest fish in the
lake.
It’s not that Windows is
unsafe; in fact Windows
updates its security fea
tures almost everyday with
patches and service packs.
It has more to do with the
“WOW’ factor, why attack
a couple of hundred thou
sand computers running
Macintosh, when you can
attack millions of comput
ers with Windows.
One of the most common
attacks is used through e
mail. A popular scam is to
send you an email, which
has a virus program, and
then once you open it the
virus will attach itself to
your address book and send
the same virus e-mail to all
of your contacts automati
cally.
There are a couple of ways
to protect yourself. First
there are certain e-mails
that have been documented
as carrying a virus. If you
receive an e-mail with any

finding a matching donor.
Not one single family mem

However, with prayers
answered, an annonymous
“Angel” donor has been
found for Luke. He will begin
intensive chemotherapy Jan.

surgery is scheduled for Jan.

of the following extensions,
from someone you don’t
know then do not open it
just delete it.
Those extensions are .scr,
which is a screensaver, .exe,
which is an executable file,
and .bat, which is a batch

should be receiving any file
with those extensions.
The next nasty little pro
gram is called the Trojan
Horse. This type of virus
appears to be a legitimate
program that may be found
on any system.
These programs do not
duplicate themselves or
attach themselves to other
programs.
Instead they are made to
appear to work properly,
they have a malicious code
hidden inside that gathers
information by monitoring
and recording computer
activity. These are hard to
detect and once they are
detected the only way to
get rid of them is to wipe
your hard drive clean and
reload everything from a
clean disk.
Spyware programs are
generally introduced to the
system through Internet
downloads that appear to be
useful programs, much like
the Trojan Horse. They can
also be acquired through
music sharing downloads.
Unlike some viruses
spyware programs do not
duplicate. After spyware is
installed it monitors the sys
tems operation and collects
information such as user
names, passwords, credit
card numbers and other
confidential information.
Then the program trans
mits this information to its
ers off the road. It requires
personal responsibility ...
responsibility that ultimately
rests with each driver.
So remember ... if you’re
caught driving impaired this
holiday season or anytime
throughout the year, there

Westfield School Counselor
Kay Grier, who has been
much more than just a coun
selor to Luke and his family
through the last few years,
said her Christmas prayer
“is for Luke to be able to
graduate in May with the
classmates he has been with
since kindergarten.”
Wanting to do something
to help the Campbell fam
ily with hospital expenses,
Westfield has sold more
than 1,000 arm bands with
the slogan: “A Country Boy
Can Survive” - one in camo
and the other hunter safe
ty orange, imprinted with
Luke’s name.

One of the most common
ways to spread spyware is
by programmers creating
fake notices that tell users
they have been infected and
that they need to download
their antispyware product.
The downloaded product is
actually a spyware product.
So how do you protect
yourself? Several companies
have created antispyware
products.
Since most people use
Windows, Microsoft has cre
ated an antivirus product
called Windows Defender. It
ships for free and is included
with Windows XR Windows
2000 and Window 2003. It
is also a free download from
their site for anyone run
ning one of those operating
systems.
Windows XP service pack
2 also introduced several
security programs such
as Windows Firewall, the
Windows Security Center
and Pop-Up Blocker for
Internet Explorer. Again
these are free programs but
you must go to their site
and download the latest ser
vice pack.
There are also antivi
rus programs that come in
two types; one that checks
for viruses already resid
ing on your system or one
that blocks it before it gets
on your system. Companies
like McAfee and Norton
Antivirus sell complete
packages that check your
Internet and block suspi
cious programs from down
loading.
They also run a check
on all CD disc and conduct
regular checks on your hard
drive and your systems
memory. Your best protec
tion is to buy what you can
afford.
If you’re on a tight budget
then use the free Windows
programs and buy at least
one antivirus program that
checks your Internet before
downloads. This could save
you lots of money and mis
ery in the long run.
