Bear Brawl third places go to Warner Robins
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
After putting nary a scratch in
the scorebook for the first half,
Warner Robins High’s guard tan
dem of Danielle Gazaway and
Quinshay Williams combined for
17 second-half points Tuesday
to lead the Demonettes to third
place in the girls division of the
2008 Chick-Fil-A Bear Brawl.
It was a bit of a bonus city and
Region 1-AAAAA rivalry match
up for this season as the Warner
Robins girls defeated the host
Houston County High Lady Bears
48-41.
The Demonettes already held
one victory against the Houston
girls in the first region meeting
on Dec. 12, and the third game,
which will also take place in the
Bear Den and count in the region
standings, is slated for Jan. 20.

there was no visible evi

tragic event.
“I’m feeling real good,”
said Martin after Warner
Robins beat Upson-Lee for
third place in the Houston
County High Chick-Fil-

A few back pains here and

Martin was hospitalized
for two weeks. When he
regained consciousness
in the hospital, he said it
wasn’t a case where he
didn’t remember who he
was, and he was able to
communicate with the doc
tors and family members.
Much of that day’s events

ers for coach Tom Mobley to reg
ister 11 points in Tuesday’s game.
A pair of freshmen, Kenyona
Armstrong and Diamond Hudson,
also chipped in with 11 each.
Houston County coach Sid
Baxley took this opportunity to
give one of his freshman guards
on varsity, Lasha Roberts, some
court time. Roberts rewarded him
with an 11-point effort. Senior
Alexis Hewitt in the post led all
scorers with 17.
Neither county team had an
impressive showing while fall
ing in Monday’s Bear Brawl girls
semifinals. So there was plenty to
prove at tip-off, and it was Hudson
who, in the last 90 seconds, made
two 3-pointers off the bench and
stole a Houston pass intended for
the lane. Armstrong added a trey
to lead the Demonettes to a 16-7
lead.
Hewitt accounted for all the
Lady Bear scoring in those first
up to the beginning of
the football game,” said
Martin. “I remember the
school day.
“I woke up in the hospi

questions. That was days
later.
“I wasn’t in real pain
when I woke up. I didn’t
start having a lot of pain
until maybe five or six days
in. My upper back was hurt
ing real bad. They said that
was because nerves were
damaged and the muscles
were stretched.
“I was ‘up’ until I left with
the exception of sleeping,
the little sleep I got. I could
get up, but I was hooked to
IV’s, so I couldn’t just walk
around. I could get out of
bed and roll the thing with
the IV’s to the restroom
and stuff like that. They
keep you sealed up when
you are in ICU.”
Two weeks before the
Christmas holiday break,
Martin was cleared to
return to Warner Robins
Middle on a limited basis,
that being two half-days a
week. He didn’t go, how
ever, due to problems with
his legs.

Hamborg added he is
optimistic that other WRA

eight minutes. It was Roberts,
though, who sparked a second
quarter comeback for her club
with two 3-balls. Hewitt got the
ball back inside and tied the game
16-16.
While the ‘visiting’ team had
nothing for more than five min
utes - missing two late lay-ups
- Sharonda Aldridge pushed
Houston County to a two-point
advantage, 21-19, at the break.
Aldridge stole the ball in the last
second after finding Jayde Sparks
for an easy two.
Mobley had to go the majority of
the action without senior forward
Lakeisha Colbert, who re-aggra
vated a shoulder injury. His sec
ond-half plan was obvious: tighten
up the defense and take the ball to
the basket. Gazaway was doing
just that, and the Demonettes
opened the third quarter with a
6-0 run.
Hudson sank another 3-pointer
coach, but I haven’t been
going to practice with coach
Malone,” said Martin. “I’ve
been at all the games, just
helping in that way.”
Returning to the Warner
Robins High basketball
games has allowed all those
who know Martin through
his educational position the
chance to express their love
and concern, even if it’s
just been in the form of a
hug or pat on the back.
“Just to sum it up, I’ll say
I’m blessed,” he said. “I got
a lot of people pulling for
me. I’ve got the kids’ sup
port, my faculty members,
the community, the board
of education. I’m just ready
to work.”
It would be hard, though,
to avoid all the questions
about this experience. All
he can honestly say is that
he doesn’t remember it, if
there was any instant feel
ing of intense pain.
“I can just tell you what
people told me, people
who saw it that day,” said
Martin.

and while no one has asked

I didn’t question Him. I

“I know a lot of people

it’s just not me.”
There is a long list of
people Martin knows he
will not be able to thank
enough. It starts with the
staff at Warner Robins
Middle School. He said his
coaches kept things going

ball games, and they didn’t

questions.
“It takes all of us work
ing together to do what
we’re supposed to do as
teachers at Warner Robins
