A HUXLEY ANECDOTE.
A Huxley anecdote from John
Fiske’s essays recently issued is
interesting. The author says:
I never knew (not being inquisitive)
just when the Huxleys began having
their “tall teas” on Sunday evening;
but during their first winter I seldom
met any visitors at their house, except
once or twice Ray Lankester and
Michael Foster. Afterward, Huxley,
with his wife, on their visit to Amer
ica, spent a few summer days with my
family at Petersham, where the great
natuialist learned for the first time
what a tin dipper is. Once, in Lon
don, in speaking about the starw
heaven, I had said that I never could
make head or tail of any constellation
except the dipper, and of course every
body must recognize in that the re
semblance to a dipper. To my sur
prise, one of the young ladies asked,
“What is a dipper?” My effort at
explanation went far enough to evoke
the idea of a “ladle,” but with that
approximation I was fain to let the
matter rest until that August day in
New England, when, after a tramp in
the woods, my friend quaffed cool
mountain water from a dipper, and 1
was told that not only the name, but
the thing is a Yankee notion. —Ex-

ONE SOURCE OF NEWS.
For many years a certain New York
paper received society and club gos
sip from a man whose identity was
concealed by a clever ruse. Even his
checks were made out to his wife —in
her maiden name. He furnished infor
mation about the doings and wrangles
in various clubs; little stories involv
ing people whose names are known by
reputation to practically all readers of
newspaper columns. He is said thus
to have averaged an income of about
ten dollars a week —not much, but
enough to buy hats, gloves and canes.
He was a most immaculate and appar
ently prosperous person. It is need
less to say that he has never been
suspected of this small traffic. A
wealthy relative died and left him
independent. When some such man
furnishes the clew to a delectable
scandal he has done a stroke of busi
ness that will keep him in small luxu
ries for months to come. —From
“Newspaper Tips and Tipsters,” by
Whitman Bennett, in Bohemian for
June.
IN DOUBT.
A certain young man who, according
to all the accepted notions, should be
very happy at this time, was found by
a friend the other day with a some
what troubled look upon his face.
“What’s the matter, old man?
Haven’t had a tilt, have you?” the
friend inquired.
“N —no,” was the reply, accompanied
by a sigh. “Fact is,” he continued, in
a burst of confidence, “I’ve been think
ing over a little remark Alice made
last night.”
“Oh, perhaps you misunderstood!”
the friend suggested encouragingly.
“I hope so,” was the reply. “You
see, we were talking of —well, how
things would be, you know, and Alice
said:
“ ‘And won’t it be just too sweet;
you will come home all tired out from
your hard day’s work, and hold me op
your lap for hours, and read to me, and
drive all my cares away, and dry my
tears, and rub my head —and it will be
just like a novel!” —Harper’s Weekly.
Optimist—This sausage is very
good. It actually tastes game.
Pessimist —Made from a bird dog,
probably.—From the June Bohemian.
