Students can get free flu vaccinations
The Barrow County Health Department, with assistance from Georgia Public
Health, has partnered with Barrow County schools to offer a free flu shot to every
uninsured child aged 6 months to 18-years-old who is enrolled in daycare, Pre-K,
or the Barrow County School System.
If your child has Medicaid, Wellcare, Amerigroup, Peach State or insurance,
please bring that card with you.
For adults, flu shots are available for $25 cash or with no out-of-pocket cost
with Medicare, Medicaid and most insurances. Flu shots will be the priority at the
health department the week of Oct. 11-14.
The Barrow County Health Department is located at 15 Porter Street, behind the
historical courthouse and across from the old train engine.
Scam alert issued by Winder police
During the past sev
eral days, the Winder
Police Department has
had numerous reports of
a scam utilizing the same
story:
Someone calls the
victim claiming to be a
deputy from the Barrow
County Sheriffs Office
and uses the name of an
actual supervisor currently
employed with the sher
iff’s office. The caller
says, “You failed to show
up for jury duty this morn
ing and there is now a war
rant for your arrest. If you
pay the $500 fine right now
we will clear things up and
when you show up, you
can get your money back.”
Once the scammers get the
first $500, they try and get
additional funds by saying
there are back-taxes due.
They demand payment via
Money Pak cards. The
phone numbers have been
untraceable so far.
Thankfully, many of the
reporting potential victims
knew it was a scam and
hung up. However, several
have paid money, some
totaling in the thousands.
If you receive this type of
call, just hang up. If you
think you may owe money
for a fine or other court
fee, call the police depart
ment or sheriffs office
directly.
Please be aware that the
sheriffs office, the police
department, nor the IRS
will call you and demand
you pay money over the
phone. Also, these scam
mers can get names of
officers off the web pages
of these departments so
it is likely the names
they are using are actu
al employees. If you feel
you have been a victim
of this type of incident,
please call your local law
enforcement agency and
report it immediately.
