g HONESTY IN POLITICS
;4 The great British strike promised
imn upset of governemt at one time
}}ind the whole world was watching
;zj'w'lth great concern, for heavy clouds
o 8 trouble were overhanging. That
(;'Z\ldsc ali‘pi¥ked and England is now
on th'o way back to normal in a com
paratively short time has been a won
der of wonders throughout the world.
People have asked how it could be
relieved so soon.
The Christian Science Monitor has
a correspondent in London who had
this tribute to pay the British premi
ér:
"', “As the world rates ability, Mr.
Baldwin is not a particularly abl
maw. He las neither great personal
force, unusual executive ability, nor
exceptional brilliance of any kind.
What he has is a sterling honesty of
character, a genuine love angd fellow
fceling for his neighbor of all ranks
and clagses, and, what is uncommon
in “our> paganized modern civilization,
a deep and utterly unpharisaical re
llgl_bu'q sense.
Beyoid all doubt Mr. Baidwin was
the man to stand at the head of th(-‘
nation’s affairs in the last crisis. The’
one essontial thing was not that the
Prime Minister should be a man m!
remarkable ability, but that he should
be a man whom everyhody trusted t‘nrj
his humanity and his transparent
good will. Probably nothing else
could have prevented bitter and war.
like feeling taking charge of both
sides before the opportunity for peace.
ful settlement could be seized und;
during the difficult time of re-instate
ment afterward.” ‘
Here was a man of rugged honesty
in office—one mnot so brilliant( but
one who could be trusted. That's the
highest tribute we have seen in mod
ern timeg to any wman in public office.
Here in this country we might 10;1\;1\1
great lessons in polities from \hi\ tri»:
bute which has been paid to Baldwin.
Here in Georgia we are entering Intn}
the choice of a governon"—ontm'lugl
throqgh a season of the cheapest peu-i
nut i')ulfti('s we havZ* experienced in
many a season. How wisely we might
choose if we should pull ourselves to
gether and go for the man of ruggod‘
honesty and integrity.
: ‘.Wg’ can do that. We have an op
portunity to do this while we ar
just entering. Why not think of the
man whe is built with a rugged lon
esty that will take us through just
such crises as that Baldwin has pass.

HER GOLD DAYS OVER
Hidden in the Eldorado county hills

Once a city of 10,000 population, it
has dwindled until the census taker
must count carefully to register a to

‘Weed-grown foundations of business
hlocks.
When the gold fever was at its
height, stores of all Kinds llnqd the
itrects of Coloma—there were four
oen hotels, the inevitable Wells-Far

oons, gambling houses, a Chinese

HOME FOR 'THE 3INGERS
Wherever one turns in Cordele it
4 casy to find lhere,l; a 4 strong de
sire 1o provide ‘a great -permanent
tome for the South Georgia Union
jingers when they come here this
ime for their annual convention,
This is without question the largest
wrganization of the kind anywhere in
his section ang it has made this its
:llP('lhlg’ point long enough to know
retty well about making this a per
nanent meeting place.
With those who have the business
of making this convention a success
m their hands, thig is the place, They
have already chosen. They know.
Left to the leaders, this will be the
)ermanent meeting place of all south
ieorgia singers and they will come
lere in great numbers. This has al
‘cady proven true in past sessions.
‘t will continue so, for we venture
he assertion without fear of contra
liction that Cordele is central.for the
greatest number of those attending
he singing conventions of any other
point in Georgia.
We discuss this thing because it
carries with it a great deal of im
portance. The singing conventions
ire not a fad. They are a permanent
institution in Georgia—in several
jouthern states. The South Georgia
lnion Singing Convention is the
reat body into which all the county
ind local singing bodies converge and
t représents a federation of all the
Jubs and organizations which keep
ive good vocal music throughout
his and adjoining states.
When Cordele provides a perma
yent home for this organization, it
builds for an institution which is go
ng: to remain the vastly important
nusical subsidiary of all the chris
ian churches. In song we would like
o believe it reaches pcople in a way
iruly effective and yet far different
‘rom that used by the preacher in
his most appealing message. These
‘onventions carry the christian mes
;age in song to many people. We arc
loing a very great work when we are
woviding those things which go
oward making the singing conven
ion a way to be larger and more
seful.
We ought to think of the great au
ditorium which the singers want here
as something they must have. They
vant something specially Dbuilt for
‘heir own use—a building contructed
with a view of providing the needs of
the convention. We are not alone in
wr wishes that this building be pro
vided for the Union singersl s 0 they
will always be secure in their plans
for large crowds. Qur stadium will be
Ised this time for the larger meet
ings. It will doubtless house all who
'ome, but an auditorium for the
singers that has special design and
onstruction for the needs of the
singers is what is really needed. A
fine attitude towards this movement
8 being taken in Cordele and it prom:
{ges to result in definite action.
These thousands who want to come
here as a meeting point for the annua'
3inging events ought to be assured
ithey will be cared for wlth.u perma
nent, spacious building to meet al
their needs. .
THE WEATHER MAN
“Please,” asked the timid voice of
a girl over the telcphone,” can you
‘ell me whether June 17 will be fair?”
Jamcs 11. Scarr, New York's veter
i weather man, glanced at maps and
‘ecords on his desk and pondered a
noment,
“Why, that’s your wedding day,
sn't it? 7"
“Yes,” the voice faltered in sur
prise. “Yes, but how did you know?”
“Oh, I just surmised. 1 can tell
you only this about the weather: you
will always remember June 17 ag the
hrightest day of your life.”
This call came to the weather man
oxactly; a hundred and sevenicen oy
before 'Juno 17. It was impossible to
forecast accurately what the weather
on that date would be. Here is his
reagson for the answer he gave:
“Our greatest enjoyment in life us
uwally comes in anticipation. If 1 had
}tol(l her it would be cloudy and rainy
on June 17, the would have experi
enced one hundred and sevehteen‘
days ()f‘ worry. But with what I told
her she had one hundred and seven
teen days of delightful anticipation.
“I figured that if it rained on June
17, there would be only one day of
worry and that she hardly would no-‘
tice the rain anyway in the éxcitement‘
and joy of getting married.”
Brides-to-be are among the fifteen
hundred persons who daily call the
weather bureau for information. On
some days the office operator lists as
many as a thousand “busy calls.”
People planning picnics ‘phone,’ the
tired clerk who wants to know which
weel out of several will be best for
him to take his vacation; officials pre
paring for conventions call; managers
selecting opening nights for new
plays.
Millionuirqs who want to set sail in
yachts for distant points constantly
