L. A. OBENCHAIN LOSES HIS
LIFE IN SAVANNAH RIVER,
AUGUSTA,, Ga., August 10-—(P)
~L. A. Obenchain, of Virginia,
foreman of a Postal Telegraph con
struction gang working here, was
drowned shortly after 2 o'clock this
afternoon in the Savannah river
when a boat in which he was work
0' g overturned,
J. W. Fincher, of Buchannan, Ga.,
who was working in the boat with
Obenchain, was saved by C, C. Wall,
of Winder, Ga., who dropped a rope
from a railroad bridge and pulled
Fincher to shore after he had
caught it.
Obenchain and Fincher were mid
stream in the boat working with a
new cable which they were streteh
ing across the river, when the bu:ll1
capsized. Both were seen swimming
but Obenchain went underwater be
fore he reached the bridge, two hun
dred yards below where other
workers were awaiting with ropes to
attempt a rescue,

The hody of Roy James, one of five
miners trapped lack Thursday in the
Hudson mine of the Ine Spar Co.,
was recovered late this afternoon by
Dewey Williamson, one of the two{
men working in the mine at thc‘

near the mouth of shaft wher it had
been drawn by a large pump put in
operation early this morning to re
move water and mud and enable
rescue workers to reach the cave-in.
~ James had not been expected to
be found alive. He was working di
rectly under the point where the
bottom fell from the storage luke‘
flooding the entire shaft. The other
four men may be safe in a higher
drift.
James’ body was placed on a ledge
inside the mine, where a pump was
used to keep the shaft clear of
i water while it was found until after
the victim’s mother, Mrs. Frank
; James, who was outside the entrance

depart: Wednesday for Desmoines.

end tragedics resulted in two deaths
here, one due to an automobile ac
cident and the other to a shooting
Both of the dead are negroes. Sam
Vickers died Sunday night in a hos
pital from a fractured gkull he re
ceived when he was thrown from
]llis buggy by an automobile which
struck him at the corner of Bellc-?
vue avenue and Maiden Lane.
Vickers struck on his head on the
gidewalk pavement and was des
perately injured from the first,
A negro riding with him was not
ceriously injured. The car was driven
by Robert Buchan, white, and he
claimed the negroes cut in front of
him too closely for him to stop.
Buchan has made no effort to es
cape and no arrest has been made
yet.
Bryant Mills, colored was shot and
instantly killed by Emanuel Flagg,
about eight miles from Dublin Sun
day afternoon while he and Flagg
were having a dispute in’ the high
way near a negro church. Bbth were
drinking and had been quarreling
some time. Flagg claims Mills was
advancing on him with a knife. _
SHERIFFS SEARCH FOR TWO
