Most of us are aware of
the touching story behind
the song, "It Is Well with
My Soul." How the author
lost his wife and children
to a shipwreck at sea, then
as he passed over the sight
where they were lost, he
penned the words to that
sacred hymn. There is
another such story that is
just as touching, but not
many people have heard it.
It starts like this...
A preacher was away at
a preacher's convention and
got word that he needed to
come home immediately.
His wife and all four of
small children had all just
been killed in a sudden and
tragic house fire and he was
needed at home. He made
his way back and worked to
make all the arrangements,
fighting overwhelming
grief and sadness, but was
able to offer them each
a special "going home"
service.
A few days after he laid
his whole family to rest,
he began to talk to God. It
appears he had developed
an anger inside his heart
and was beginning to
feel deeply dejected. The
feeling grew as the days

passed and each hour
seemed to bring more
hurt and anger to his heart
and mind. For weeks he
would walk every day, just
walking without any aim or
any real destination.
He told God, "I have
served you and preached
your word to the lost. I
have been who You wanted
me to be, and I have done
all I could to follow You.
God, is this how you repay
your people?" This thought
process went on for months
and he considered that he
may never return to the
pulpit or to any mission
field, ever again.
The next evening the
preacher went on his daily
walk, but this time hi walk
took him passed a grand
new cathedral that was in its
final stages of construction.
He stopped just opposite
the church and took a seat
on a park bench there. He
watched as the workers
left for home one by one
but noticed that an old
stone mason still toiled on
in his work. The preacher
watched the stone mason
work and soon realized
that he was working on a
single stone. Hours passed

“The Taco
Love Languages”
Let’s talk about love
languages - more
specifically, “The 5 Love
Languages” written by
Gary Chapman. In it, he
names five languages
of love - how we like to
give and receive love in
relationships. Knowing
these love languages help
us understand ourselves
and others better in close
relationships, especially
in marriage relationships.
Some funny person on the
internet has taken the
“The 5 Love Languages”
a step further but turning
them into “The Taco Love
Languages” and since he
did, I’m going to use them
to help explain the love
languages!
Acts of Service. “I made
you tacos.” Acts of service
is the language of someone
doing something for you.
It could be making tacos,
a prime rib, or a ham
sandwich. Acts of service
could be washing dishes,
folding laundry, or filling
up your car with gas.
Quality Time. “Let’s go eat
tacos together.” Quality
time is the language of
spending time together -
being together and doing
things together. Quality
time could be going to a
movie together or sitting
on the couch and watching
Netflix. It could also be
going to Paris or going to
the grocery store.
Gifts. “I bought you some
tacos.” This can be an
expensive way to love!
Gifts is the language of
receiving gifts. Some
people feel most loved
when they receive gifts.
Gifts can range from a
note left on the windshield,
a “just thinking about
you” card purchased on a
regular day, to flowers sent
at work, to a new diamond
ring or car.
Words of Affirmation.
“Your tacos are delicious.”
Words of affirmation uses
language! This consist
of being told that you are
loved or being filled up by
words. Some people need
to be told and reminded
that they are loved. It
can be compliments,
encouragement, or
declared love and words of
affirmation can be spoken
or written down.
Physical Touch. “Let me
hold you like a taco.” This
love language is simple to
explain, someone with the
physical touch language
likes to be touched. This
means nearness - sitting
next to each other on the
couch or on the same side
in a booth in a restaurant,
holding hands, or placing
an arm around the
shoulders. Physical touch
is a physical reminder of
love.
How do you most feel
loved? Which of these
love languages are you
strong in, and weak in?
The challenge with love
languages is that we tend
to give love in the way we
like to receive love. We
tend to speak in our own
love language, when our
loved ones may not speak
in that same language
- they may speak in a
foreign love language to
us. If we truly want to love
our loved ones, we must
become fluent in their love
language. A helpful tool
that I share with couples is
the smartphone app, “Love
Nudge”. This app gives
you a quiz that helps you
learn your love languages.
You and your spouse can
download the app and
have a good starting point
for speaking each other’s
love languages.
In Matthew 22:37-38
Jesus said, “Love the Lord
your God with all your
heart, with all your soul,
and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and
most important command.
The second is like it:
"Love your neighbor as
yourself.” God created us
to love Him and to love
others. We were created to
love and to be loved - by
God and others.
