Tennis Boys’ and Girls’Advance to Sweet 16
Under the
Bleachers
Winning streaks and
losing streaks are part
of sports in general.
Regardless of what sport
you play, remaining
undefeated in your life
is nearly impossible.
Everyone experiences wins
and losses. This past week
the MLB world watched as
the Tampa Bay Rays tied
the longest winning streak
to open a new season with
13 straight wins. They
could not get the 14 th in
a row and will remain tied
in the history books with
the Atlanta Braves and
Milwaukee Brewers.
Speaking of winning,
as of writing the Atlanta
Braves have won 8 in a
row. They are presently
14-4 and having one of
the best starts in franchise
history.
The NBA Playoffs began
this week. The Atlanta
Hawks are in the playoffs
facing the Boston Celtics.
In a best of 7 games, the
Celtics are currently up
2-0 over the Hawks. The
Celtics are considered the
favorite to win the NBA
Championship this year.
Speaking of winning and
losing, I watch a lot of
sports. Most often I watch
baseball, but I enjoy
watching basketball and
on occasions, I will watch
a football game. One
thing I have learned is that
players, coaches, and fans
struggle with winning and
losing well. We have heard
the saying of being a sore
loser, but just as bad as a
sore loser is a sore winner.
Losing is hard at any
level. Regardless of if you
are playing a pick-up game
or playing in a regular
season game, no one likes
to lose. Fans hate to see it
and players and coaches
hate to experience it. Being
able to say, “Great game,”
to an opponent that beat
you is hard but necessary.
Yet, winning with grace
is equally as hard. Not
gloating over an opponent
is hard too. Excessive
celebrations are a penalty
in football and in basketball
can earn a team a technical
foul. Being humble in a
win is hard when you have
humbled an opponent.
This translates quickly
into life as well. We all
experience victories and
defeats in life. We are
called to celebrate the
wins and we must mourn
and learn from our losses.
Some questions that must
be asked in our attitudes of
winning and losing include,
in my winning do I offer
praise to God who brought
the victory? In our losses,
are we learning from them?
In our victories to we gloat
over our opponent, or do
we celebrate the victory
without gloating? In our
losses, are we humble
enough to say, “Good
job?” Do we show love and
honor in both winning and
losing?
We will all experience
wins, and we will all
experience losses. How we
handle both will be seen
by the watching eyes of
many people. Those in the
bleachers and even under
the bleachers will pay
attention to you. As always
Scripture teaches us best,
Romans 12: 15-18 says, “
15 Rejoice with those who
rejoice, weep with those
who weep. Live in harmony
with one another. Do not be
haughty, but associate with
the lowly. Never be wise in
your own sight. Repay no
one evil for evil, but give
thought to do what is
honorable in the sight of
all. If possible, so far as
it depends on you, live
peaceably with all.”
For the first time in
several years, the Jenkins
County boys’ and girls’
tennis teams played in
the state tournament. In
addition to making, it to
the state tournament, both
teams hosted the first
round. To make it even
better, both teams won
their first-round matches
and they are advancing to
the GHSA Class A Division
2 Sweet 16. This is the first
JCHS team to advance
beyond the first round this
season.
The boys’ team finished
their season 8-7 overall,
and defeated Hawkinsville
3- 1 in round 1. The girls’
team finished 6-9 and
defeated Wilcox County
4- 1. The boys will play
either Baconton Charter or
Charlton County, the girls
The Jenkins County War Eagles celebrated senior night Tuesday night as they hosted the McIntosh County Academy War Eagles. The

Two Exciting Wins Cap Exciting Season
The regular season for
the Jenkins County War
Eagles ended on Tuesday
night. The War Eagles
finished off their season
by winning 6 of their last 7
games. Their wins were all
against regional opponents
and set themselves in a
3-way tie for second place.
Tuesday night was not
on the original schedule
for the final games of the
season. The War Eagles
were supposed to enjoy
this week off with the
playoffs looming ahead.
The final opponent was
scheduled to be McIntosh
County Academy. The
Buccaneers had defeated
the War Eagles 7-4 in their
first matchup, and a rainout
would delay the game
scheduled for last week to
Tuesday night.
After Senior Night
festivities, the War
Eagles took to the field.
Unfortunately, it was the
Buccaneers that stole the
spotlight to start the game.
They scored two in the
first and one in the second
leaving the War Eagles
trailing 3-0 after the first
two innings. Yet, the third
inning brought about life
to the bats of the Eagles.
In what has become a
familiar saying this season,
Gavin Underwood hit a
homerun in the bottom of
the third bringing home
Gray Amerson. The score
was 3-2 still in favor of the
Buccaneers.
The War Eagles would
enter the fourth inning and
tie the game with a Lane
Waters hit scoring Gauge
Oglesby. Then in the 5th
the runs started coming
in. The War Eagles would
score 5 in the fifth and three
in the 6th . Even though
McIntosh would score 1
run in the 7th , it would not
be enough to overcome the
deficit and the War Eagles
came away winners, 11-4.
The Jenkins County
War Eagles tallied eight
hits in the game. James
Allen and Lane Waters all
had multiple hits for the War
Eagles Allen led Jenkins
County War Eagles
Varsity with three hits in
four at-bats. Jackson Lanier
was on the mound for the
War Eagles. He pitched 6
innings on his senior night,
striking out four and only
giving up three runs as he
was credited with the win.
The second game of the
doubleheader was much
closer than the first game,
but it did not start out that
way. With the senior night
magic, the War Eagles
would start out with a quick
7-0 lead after just 2 innings.
Then the game would go
quiet run-scoring-wise until
the 5th inning when the
Buccaneers scored one mn.
In the 7th inning is when
the game got too close for
comfort. The game was cut
to a 7-6 game. Yet, with
two outs, Jackson Lanier
closed out the game with a
strikeout.
James Allen hit a
homerun to leftfield in
the bottom of the second
driving in Tyler Williams.
Allen is no stranger to
trotting around the bases in
victory. Gavin Underwood
was on the mound for the
War Eagles. Pitching his
senior night, he pitched
6 innings with seven
strikeouts and gave up four
mns. Jackson Lanier came
in relief and closed out the
game.
The War Eagles will
await the announcement
this week of where the
War Eagles will play and
who their opponent will be.

County Times Sports for
