WAR EAOJLE
By Brad Asbury, Sports Editor
for
'r111 : Times
For those of us who are
sports fans, these are the
“dog days of summer.” If
you are an avid MLB fan,
as I am, you are enjoying
some great baseball!
However, if you are a
basketball, football, or any
other major sports fan, you
are about to lose your mind
as the summer drought of
sports continues! This is
the time of the year that
there are very few sporting
events except baseball.
Soon, football will be
kicking off, and shortly
after that basketball will as
well. Until then, grab some
peanuts and cracker jacks
and take in “America’s
favorite pastime.”
The prestigious
Wimbledon Tennis
Tournament concluded on
Sunday. The third grand
slam tennis tournament
of the season concluded
on Sunday. This year
featured two records in
the championship matches.
On the women’s side,
on Saturday, Marketa
Vondrousova became the
first unseeded female
champion. She defeated
Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-4 to
capture the prestigious
prize. Sunday was the
men’s championship and
Carlos Alcaraz became
the third youngest player
to win Wimbledon. He
defeated Novak Djokovic
in a tight, four-set match
by a score of 1-6, 7-6, 6-1,
3-6, 6-4.
Speaking of records,
former Canadian Football
League player, Terry
Vaughn was made famous
for saying, “Records are
meant to be broken.” Once
a record is broken, the
question becomes, “How
long will the team or player
continue to increase the
record?” On Saturday, the
Braves had their 28 th
consecutive game with a
home run. Previously the
franchise record was 25
which was set by the 1998
Atlanta Braves. The number
of consecutive games with
a home run will stand at 28
as the Braves failed to get
Under the
Bleachers
a home run in a loss to the
Chicago White Sox. How
long will it be before the
record is broken again?
Many athletes and non
athletes seek to break
records, set standards, and
sometimes simply become
known for something.
Other times people just
seem to desire to exist,
making it through life
someway, somehow. Are
we called to break records?
Are we called to just
exist? We are called to
faithfulness! We are called
to run the race until the end.
We are called to live for
His glory. As 1 Corinthians
10:31 reminds us, whether
we are eating or drinking
or doing, we are to do so to
the glory of God
We exist, not to make a
name for ourselves, but
rather to exalt His name
and to worship Him. It is
important that we keep that
thought in its proper place.
Otherwise, we will only be
about a name for ourselves
if we are not careful. While
observing “Under the
Bleachers,” I must say that
it is great for athletes to
strive for greatness in their
sport. They can seek to
break records, win games,
earn championships, and
dominate their opponents.
However, we must
remember that if we lose
sight of our team focus, all
will be a loss. If we lose
sight of who gave us the
ability to compete, we will
lose sight.
Live every day for His
glory. Place Him in His
rightful place, which is
King of all! Let us strive
to live for His glory, not
for self-glory! In the end,
put Him first and the team
first. If you collect personal
or team records, remember
there is a whole fan section
waiting to celebrate from
under the bleachers and
in the stands! Remember,
if you have attained a
great record, someone,
somewhere will eventually
beat it; that is what records
are made for!
Are you Ready for Football?
In less than two weeks the Jenkins County football team
will take the field for the first scrimmage game of the year.
In what should be one of the best teams in the last few
years, there is much excitement building for the War Eagles.
Second-year head coach Charley Waters will be looking to
capitalize on a great season last year and build upon that
success. Last season, the War Eagles finished 2 nd in region
3 and hosted playoffs. The team looks poised for a repeat
run at the regional title and the playoffs.
Just as last season, the War Eagles will play four regional
games. They will play at home against McIntosh County
Academy and ECI, while they will be on the road to Portal
and Montgomery County. My prediction this season is

that the order of finish for the Region will be Jenkins
County, McIntosh County Academy, ECI, Portal, and
Montgomery will round out the region. McIntosh
County will be, as always a tough regional opponent.
ECI is always a huge rivalry, especially now that the
War Eagles have won 2 out of the last 3 games against
ECI.
The toughest War Eagle opponent this season will
once again be Johnson County. Johnson County
advanced last season to the state semifinals before
being eliminated. The state semifinal loss was their only
loss of the season. They did lose several seniors, but the
team will be looking to advance further than last season.
Regardless of how the season finishes, it will be an
exciting one as the War Eagles look forward to another
season. Join the War Eagles this season as they have
several home games. All home games are played at Roy
Head Stadium on the campus of Jenkins County High
School.

2023 Softball Schedule
The 2023 JCHS Lady War Eagle softball schedule has
been set. This year the Lady War Eagles will compete
for a second year in Class A Division 2 and Region 3.
Once again, the region will consist of McIntosh County
Academy, Portal, ECI, and Montgomery County. Just as
in the previous year, the top four teams in regional play
will advance to the State Super Regionals. Last season,
Region 3 was one of the toughest regions in the state as
ECI won the state championship.
This season, the team will look to build some
momentum by adding several freshmen to an already
talented team. Renee Hearn will once again be the
head coach for the Lady War Eagles! While the first
opportunity for fans to see the team will be on August
10th at home for a regular season
matchup.
