Lariscy named STAR Student
-Joe Brady
Sylvania Times Editor
Emily Lariscy has been walking the
halls of the Screven County School
System her entire life and every teacher
she has encountered has made an
indelible impression upon
her. “All of my teachers
throughout my school
career have impacted me.
It was hard deciding on
just one to share my honor
with,” but she chose her
math teacher, Amy Sheley,
a three-time winner in the
previous four years.
Emily is a native of
Screven County and the
daughter of proud parents
Jessica Underwood and
Rodney Lariscy. She also
has a brother, Landon
Underwood. “I have
always tried to be well-
rounded. I also play 2
sports, so it’s not always
about academics,” Emily
explains.
STAR students must
have the highest SAT
score on a single test date
and be in the top 10% of
their graduating class.
The Student Teacher
Achievement Recognition
(STAR) program is sponsored by the
Professional Association of Georgia
Educators. The local sponsor is the
Sylvania Junior Women’s Club.
Emily admits that math is “kind of my
thing,” and language arts is probably
something she doesn’t care about as
much. “Math is just so logical, it’s not
up for interpretation.”
Emily has been accepted to the
University of Georgia and Georgia
Tech; she hasn’t decided which one
Emily Lariscy & Amy Sheley
she will attend in the fall. Her major
will be Chemical and Biomolecular
Engineering.
Amy Sheley has been teaching for
eleven years, all that time spent in
Screven County. “I am from Moultrie
and graduated from Georgia Southern
University in 2010.” She met husband
Josh Sheley, a Screven County native,
who also teaches in the Screven County
School District and the rest they say is
history. The couple have
two boys.
“Receiving this honor is
very rewarding. It lets me
know that I have reached a
student. When one of them
excels at math, I have done
my job.” Sheley explains
as she gets emotional.
Special teachers in our
lives have left their marks
in all of us, the tradition
continues with instructors
like Mrs. Sheley.
“I chose Mrs. Sheley
because she’s really chill.
When we ask her why, she
explains it, she listens,”
Emily says, “she just gets
us.” Because Emily is
in the AP program, she
will receive roughly two
semesters of college credit
if all the exams are passed.
When asked if she’s ready
to leave the safety and
security of the SCHS halls,
Emily replies, “I’m ready
academically but jumping
into the world is a scary thing. There
are a lot of people out there.”
DIXIE ECHOES to return to
First Baptist Church
-Jake Gay
Staff Reporter
In June 2021 the First Baptist Church of Sylvania hosted the
legendary gospel group Dixie Echoes. If you missed them,
don’t fret because they are returning for one night only. They
will again be performing at the First Baptist Church in Sylvania
on January 30th at 6:30 p.m. The Dixie Echoes are a Southern
Gospel group, consisting of Randy Shelnut and his son Randy
Shelnut Jr., known by southern gospel fans as “Scoot”, Jordan
Wilson, and Trenton Williamson.
The group was fomied in 1960 and they are considered one of
the pioneer gospel groups. Since their incarnation they have re
leased nearly 70 albums. They have also had numerous top 10
singles and been honored with six of their members inducted
into the Southern Gospel Hall of Fame. From 1997 to 2017 the
six members holding that prestigious honor are JG Whitfield,
Dale Shelnut, Jack Toney, Bill Todd, Tim Riley and Randy
Shelnut.
The group has performed all over the United States and have
also made appearances in Canada and Mexico. They have per
formed in well- known venues such as Carnegie Hall, National Quartet Convention, Gospel Jubilee Cruise and Dollywood
just to name a few. They have also appeared on television stations such as TBN and INSP.
The group is perhaps best well-known for their regular appearance on the Gospel Singing Jubilee which aired nationally in
the late 1960’s and into the 1970’s.This group has been able to share the gospel for many years.
But don’t just take my word for them being a great gospel group. Come witness them in person on January 30, 2022 at First
Baptist Church. There will be no charge for admission but a love offering will be taken.
