inter collegiate oratorical contest to
be held tharu during Mardi Gras,
reported. It had arrangtd for eight
men from the two societies to con
test in the chapel two weeks from
to-day, and the best speaker of the
eight to be sent to New Orleans.
A motion to accept the report re
sulted in a storm of discussion. For
more than an hour the members de
bated warmly whether or not (tour
gia should lie represented at New
Orleans. There seemed to be more
depth to the question than was up
parent at first glance; the const-
queuces of action either for or
ugainst the measure were shown to
be of the greatest i in porta line; and
in the course of the debate, some
very good extemporaneous speeches
were delivered on both stiles. But
at last the arguments of the opposi
tion were refilled, the committee
was vindicated, mid the vote that
followed determined that tieorgia
will be represented at Now Orleans
next month.
In the election that followed, out
of six candidates, Messrs. Jackson,
Myrick, Moore and Haralson were
chosen as contestants for the place
from Phi Kappa.
The importance of this day's ac
tion can hardly be estimated* It is
but an indication of the new strength
mid lile that has lately come to the
literary societies; while the two in-
vilalioua received within the last
two weeks are but a recognition of
the increased importance and power
of the University of tieorgia.
