NORTH CAROLINA'S EXPLANATION.
The following account, lame,
halt, blind, and atllicted with
all the ailments that beset weak
explanations and apologies, ap
pears in the Tar lleel'x account
of the second Georgia game:
“It perhaps is necessary to ex
plain why the second game end
ed in a tie. In the third inning
Carolina had three men to crote
the plate. (The italics are in
serted by the Red anii Bi.ack
through sheer sympathy.) —
Then with the bases full and two
I out, the pitcher made a balk.
The umpire, though at the time
he did not score the man on the
third, united until three men were
out and then inutrueted Carolina
to teore a fourth run for the mix-
take." (Our italics again, but

Editorially, the Tar Heel de- ,
livers itself as follows : “Before
we play our next games in At- j

see that our hoo-doo which re
sides there has been removed.”
After bewailing Carolina’s de-,
feat at Sewanee’s hands, or feet,
last fall in Atlanta, just another
visitation of hard luck, the ed
itor continues, “With thestrong-
est team in our history thus dis
abled, it could only take one
game from Georgia and tie the
second, while Georgia’s team is
us weak as ours is strong.”
Now wouldn’t that give you

as published in a letter to the

claiming undoubted superiority
for that team, we are of a mind
that the outcome of the games
is at least problematical.
We note with fear and trem
bling that the newspaper lie-
counts have lately put no errors
in Mercer’s column, and whilst
we are compelled to believe that
this is a typographical mistake
on tlie part of the man who re
ports the games, we must pre
pare against such faultless play
ing by learning to make hard,
clean hits.
We express Georgia’s desire
and determination that this
year’s contest shall want that
element of disagreeable wrang
ling which has been so much in
evidence in the games of past |
years.
At this time there is no or-,

Before the end of the current

relieving the embarrassment
which has stared athletics al

through the next year, if we re
