Bulldog Grid Leaders of Past 10 Years
Now Engaged in Varied Phases of Work
Bullpup Grid Squad
Counts 7 Injuries;
Face Jackets Next
Hard hit by injuries, Georgia’s
freshman football squad went through
only light workouts this week-end.
No less than seven Bullpup players
were victims in Tuesday's serin-mage
against the varsity eleven.
Of the seven injured, only two
were hurt seriously enough to be
withheld from practice the remainder
of the week. Heywood Allen, hailed
as a future passing star, suffered the
worst damage when a nasty gash
over an eye required two stitches.
John Phillips, the second injured
player, was still confined to the In
firmary after being knocked out in
scrimmage.
Georgia Tech’s freshman team is
the one remaining foe on the Bull
pup schedule. Impressive in their
overwhelming victory over Gordon
Military College last week, the Tech
freshmen are expected to afford the
Bullpups plenty of opposition when
the two elevens renew their annual
rivalry in Atlanta Thanksgiving Day.
On the Baby Jacket squad is Bobby
Pair, who last year as a senior at
Tech High School was the fastest
back in G. I. A. A. gridiron compe
tition. Besides Pair, Plaster and
Massengale, also prominent prep
school stars, make the Baby Jacket
squad most formidable.

When Georgia makes her South
eastern Conference debut Saturday
against Florida’s Fighting 'Gators in
Jacksonville, Captain Quinton Lump
kin will launch a drive for a center
position on the mythical All-South
eastern team.
The Bulldog leader, who has been
a constant thorn in the sides of op
posing linemen, will get a chance
against conference foes the next four
Saturdays, and if he continues to per
form as capably for the rest of the
season as he has thus far, he will
probably be named the All-Confer
ence center.
“Lump,” who is playing his final
year with the Bulldogs, has been a
first string center since the middle of
the 1936 season, and it is rumored
that he has already been approached
with several attractive professional
ontracts.
Lumpkin also enjoys the distinc
tion of captaining the 1938 track
team, having been elected to this post
last spring.
• The Bulldog center has been recog
nized as one of the ablest leaders
Georgia has ever had, and has played
a slashing offensive and defensive
game throughout the season.

finals at the expense of John Woods
and John McDermott, respectively.
