THE RED AND BLACK. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17. 1939.
In the
Bulldogs’
Backyard
Demon Blocking Back
By O’Donald Mays
Eleven members of the Georgia
football team will play under the
Red and Black colors for the lust
time in Sanford Stadium Satur
day.
Strange haH been the fate of
these men. Experiences unparal
leled to those of other players be
fell this group. In three years of
varsity service, these men have
played under three head coaches.
This period of three ranks as
probably the most unstable in the
history of University athletics.
The effect lias been noticeable, yet
the men played, each ever-willing
to learn the system of the new
mentor.
There they go, one by one.
Captain Vassa Cate, faithful, hard
working, ever-conselous of his re
sponsibility to his teammates. And
"Smiley’’ Johnson, bashful as the
first day he set Ills foot upon the
campus, goes down In history as
one of the cleanest athletes ever
to perform for "dear old Georgia.”
Then there's "Big Jim" Ford-
ham who once romped over South
Georgia high school gridirons in
ovcrulls. Jim was ever-reliant to
get that extra yard needed to put
his team in the favorable spot.
And Knox Eldredge. Never f|ulte
largo enough to stack up phys
ically with the bigger fellows,
Knox has made up the difference
in Intestinal fortitude and has
really "stuck in there with ’em.”
Bob Salisbury, freckled-faced
and grinning; Billy Mims, whose
t|ulck thinking has pulled the tenm
through many a close situation;
and Oliver Hunnicutt, plucky back,
compose a formidable trio of the
*40 boys. Charlie Williams and
Walter Wilfong, together with
handicapped Winston Hodgson,
tiro a trio of Athens hoys who have
weathered the years together.
Dooley Matthews, another light
weight who made good, and “Hon
est Abo" Slnionton, conclude the
roll of seniors muking their fare
well bows.

Women’s Tank Meet to Be Held Nov. 21;
’Mural Golf Tournament Reaches Finals
Mermaids will have their day
Tuesday, Nov. 21, when University
women swimmers vie for honors at
7:30 in the Physical Education pool.
This meet, open to every Univer
sity woman swimmer who has the
required three practices, is the big
gest affair of its kind during the
school year. Kappa Alpha Theta
took the team title in 1938 while
Betty Rinearson was the individual
performer.
Events of the meet are 20-yard
back crawl, Bide stroke, 20-yard free
style, elementary back stroke, 40-
yard breast stroke, intermediate div
ing, 80-yard free-style relay, spring
board diving, and 60-yard balloon
medley relay.
The "Acorn Club,” hiking organi
zation for men and women students
of the University as well as faculty
members, is rapidly gaining popu
larity on the campus. Already hikes
have been made to the Oconee For
est and to Bobbin's Mill.
Officers of the club are Doris Falk,
Savannah, president; Corinne Jewell,
Savannah, secretary, and Sam Free
man, Savannah, treasurer. Meetings
and hikes are held bi-monthly at 3
o’clock with the Physical Education
Building being the starting point.
Grace Moore, Alpha Gamma, and
Frances Rich, Chi Omega, reached
the finals of the women’s intramural
golf tournament after defeating Beth
Arnold, Chi Omega, and Dot Dan
iels, Phi Mu, respectively. The
championship match will be played
this week-end.
Itiiliin Nowell, Georgia's ace blocking back, who will probably Inttv-
fere with Carolina tacklcrs many times in the game Saturday.
Ex-Bulldog Leaders
Coach Gamecocks
Three former Georgia coaches
who "turned traitor" on the Bulldogs
return to Athens tomorrow, bringing
the South Carolina Gamecocks here
for Ihelr 10th football game with
Georgia.
Rex Enright, Ted Twomey, and
Vernon Smith, who were backfleld,
line, and end coaches, respectively,
here until last year, come back to
buttle the Georgia team.
Tho trio resigned at the close of
tho season of 1937, when Harry
Mchre left to accept tho position of
head coach ut Ole Miss. Enright is
now head coach at South Carolina
Smith, an All-American end while
on the Georgia eleven, and Twomey
are also on the coaching staff of
South Carolina.
Bast year's South Curollna game
provided one of the closest and most
exciting contests of the season for
both elevens. After three passes by
ntlly Mims of 16, 18, and 20 yards
each, Jimmy Fordham bucked the
line for a touchdown and Badgett
kicked the extra point. Alex Urban,
Gamecock center, intercepted a Geor
gia pass in the third and raced 60
yards for a touchdown. The try for
conversion failed. Later the Game
cocks wore halted on the 6-yard
ntnrk and a field goal attempt was
blocked. The game ended in Geor
gia’s favor, 7 to 6.
Presumably the best two cross
country runners in the University
Henry Frederirksen and Bernle Stin
son, are unable to compete in
matches this year; the former on ac-
ount of a recent appendectomy, and
the latter on account of scholastic
difficulties.

CARBURETOR
KAYW00DIE *4
In this Kaywoodie pipe, called the Car
buretor Kaywoodie, a wonderfully sweet-
smoking pipe has been improved by the
application of a neat little principle of
physics. When you take a puff at one of
these Carburetor Kaywoodics, you auto
matically drau air in through a tiny inlet
in the bottom of the bowl. That incom
ing air keeps the smoke cool, sweet and
serene, no matter how belligerently you
puff. In fart, the harder you puff, the
more air comes in. That’s why it’s called
a Carburetor Kaywoodie. Everybody
knows that a Kaywoodie is the most so-
cially-conscious of pipes-gets itself ad
mired everywhere. And the Kaywoodie
Flavor is famous. But don’t let us urge
you—Shown above, No. 22.
